A parachute for the degree of a polynomial in algebraically independent ones

Abstract

We give a simpler proof as well as a generalization of the main result of an article of Shestakov and Umirbaev. This latter article being the first of two that solve a long-standing conjecture about the non-tameness, or "wildness", of Nagata's automorphism. As corollaries we get interesting informations about the leading terms of polynomials forming an automorphism in any dimension and reprove the tameness of automorphisms in dimension two.

Ideal transition systems

We study an inductive method of computing initial ideals and Gröbner bases for families of ideals in a polynomial ring. This method starts from a given set of pairs $(I,J)$ where $I$ is any ideal and $J$ is a monomial ideal contained in the initial ideal of $I$. These containments become a system of equalities if one can establish a particular transition recurrence among the chosen ideals. We describe explicit constructions of such systems in two motivating cases -- namely, for the ideals of matrix Schubert varieties and their skew-symmetric analogues. Despite many formal similarities with these examples, for the symmetric versions of matrix Schubert varieties, it is an open problem to construct the same kind of transition system. We present several conjectures that would follow from such a construction, while also discussing the special obstructions arising in the symmetric case.

A note on the class of sober rings

We study sober rings, a class of commutative rings in which every prime non-maximal ideal is not the intersection of the prime ideals strictly containing it. We establish basic structural properties of sober rings and investigate connections to other known classes of rings. We show that sobriety is preserved under quotients and localizations and we examine the behavior of sobriety for polynomial extensions.

Spherical Completeness, Coherence, and GCD Properties of Formal Power Series and Witt Vector Rings

Let $K$ be a complete nonarchimedean valued field with $v(K^\times)=\mathbf R$, and let $V=\mathcal O_K$. We prove that $K$ is spherically complete if and only if $V[[T]]$ is coherent, and that this is also equivalent to $V[[T]]$ being a GCD domain. If $K$ is perfect of characteristic $p$, the same characterization holds for the Witt vector ring $W(V)$. Thus, this settles the previously unresolved full-real-value-group case in the coherence problems for both formal power series and Witt vector rings. In particular, this result also gives affirmative answers to Questions~9 and~10 of Anderson--Kang--Park. The proof combines a coherence criterion for complete rings with a spherically complete valuation quotient and a uniform construction of non-finitely generated intersections of two principal ideals from an empty ball chain.
