Synthesis of Taylor Phase Screens with Karhunen-Loeve Basis Functions

Abstract

Phase screens above a telescope pupil represent the variation of the phase of the electromagnetic field induced by atmospheric turbulence. Instances drawn from such statistics are represented by a vector of random phase amplitudes which are coefficients of a linear superposition of two-dimensional basis functions across the pupil. This work shortly reviews Fried's analysis of this modal decomposition for the case of Kolmogorov statistics of the phase covariance as a function of separation in the pupil plane. We focus on the numerical synthesis of phase screens. The statistically independent modes are transformed into the eigen-modes of a gradient matrix as time-dependence is introduced such that on short time scales the instances of the phase screens are rigidly shifted into a direction imposed by some wind velocity - known as the Taylor frozen screen approximation. This simple technique factorizes spatial and temporal variables and aims at binding the time dependence of the phase screens to the few expansion coefficients of the basis functions that obey a stochastic time-dependent differential equation.

Multiband optical surface brightness profile decompositions of the Seyfert galaxies Mrk 79 and NGC 5548

We present preliminary results of the Johnson-Cousins (U)BVRI surface brightness profile decompositions of the Seyfert galaxies Mrk 79 and NGC 5548. The profiles were modelled as a sum of a Gaussian law for the nucleus, a Sersic law for the bulge and an exponent law for the disk. A flat bar was added to the model profile of Mrk 79. The parameters and the total magnitudes of the structural components were derived.

Gamma-ray Constraints on Dark Matter Annihilation into Charged Particles

Dark matter annihilation into charged particles is necessarily accompanied by gamma rays, produced via radiative corrections. Internal bremsstrahlung from the final state particles can produce hard gamma rays up to the dark matter mass, with an approximately model-independent spectrum. Focusing on annihilation into electrons, we compute robust upper bounds on the dark matter self annihilation cross section $<σ_A v >_{e^+e^-}$ using gamma ray data from the Milky Way spanning a wide range of energies, $\sim10^{-3} - 10^4$ GeV. We also compute corresponding bounds for the other charged leptons. We make conservative assumptions about the astrophysical inputs, and demonstrate how our derived bounds would be strengthened if stronger assumptions about these inputs are adopted. The fraction of hard gamma rays near the endpoint accompanying annihilation to $e^+e^-$ is only a factor of $\alt 10^2$ lower than for annihilation directly to monoenergetic gamma rays. The bound on $<σ_A v >_{e^+e^-}$ is thus weaker than that for $<σ_A v >_{γγ}$ by this same factor. The upper bounds on the annihilation cross sections to charged leptons are compared with an upper bound on the {\it total} annihilation cross section defined by neutrinos.

Einstein Field Equation: the Root of All Evil? Quantum Gravity, Solar Application and the Prediction on Gravity Probe B

The starting point of quantum mechanics is the relationship between energy and momentum: energy is proportional to the squared momentum! As a result, energy and momentum have not been treated equally. The wave equation required by quantization is a differential equation which accordingly, does not treat time and space equally. As a result, the Planck constant is not canceled out from the two sides of the equation. Dr. He's gravity is the local bending of background space-time which as suggested by Einstein, can be described by a differential form of second order, and treats time and space equally. Therefore, the Planck constant is completely canceled out in the resulting wave equation. In other words, the quantization of gravity simply does not need the Planck constant!
