Linear dilatation structures and inverse semigroups

Abstract

Here we prove that for dilatation structures linearity (see arXiv:0705.1440v1) is equivalent to a statement about the inverse semigroup generated by the family of dilatations of the space. The result is new for Carnot groups and the proof seems to be new even for vector spaces.

Acylindrical hyperbolicity of automorphism groups and property $R_\infty$ for generalized Higman groups

We consider the Higman groups $H_k$ ($k\ge 4$) and their generalizations studied by Martin and Horbez--Huang. We prove that the automorphism groups of the Horbez--Huang groups on at least five generators, as well as those of Martin's $4$-generated Higman-like groups, are acylindrically hyperbolic. It follows that the groups themselves are acylindrically hyperbolic, admit infinite-dimensional spaces of automorphism-invariant homogeneous quasimorphisms, have infinite $2$-generated simple characteristic quotients, and satisfy property $R_\infty$. We also prove, using Delzant's lemma, a general criterion ensuring that an individual automorphism has infinite Reidemeister number: if $G$ is a group, $φ\in\operatorname{Aut}(G)$, the group $Γ_φ=\langle\operatorname{Inn}(G),φ\rangle$ acts by isometries on a Gromov-hyperbolic space, and the restricted action of $\operatorname{Inn}(G)$ has two independent loxodromic elements, then $R(φ)=\infty$.

Mazurov's question on fixed points of automorphisms of free Burnside groups

In the Kourovka Notebook, V.\,D.~Mazurov asked whether an automorphism $α$ of prime order $m$ of the infinite free Burnside group $G=B(m,q)$ of prime period $q$ that cyclically permutes the free generators of $G$ must have a nontrivial fixed point. In this paper, we show that for $m\ge3$ the answer is negative for all sufficiently large prime periods $q$. Precisely, we prove that for any odd $m\ge3$, there exists $q_m>0$ such that for every prime period $q>q_m$, the automorphism of $B(m,q)$ of order $m$ that cyclically permutes its free generators is fixed-point-free.

Two-element factors and finite bases for additively idempotent semirings

For every additively idempotent semiring $S$ in the constant-free signature, $S$ is finitely based if and only if $S\times E$ is finitely based when $E=M_2$ or $T_2$. For each $E\in\{L_2,R_2,D_2,N_2\}$, both implications fail even for finite $S$: we give a finite finitely based semiring whose product with $E$ is nonfinitely based and a finite nonfinitely based semiring whose product with $E$ is finitely based.
