Verhulst's logistic curve

Abstract

We observe that the elementary logistic differential equation dP/dt=(1-P/M)kP may be solved by first changing the variable to R=(M-P)/P. This reduces the logistic differential equation to the simple linear differential equation dR/dt=-kR, which can be solved without using the customary but slightly more elaborate methods applied to the original logistic DE. The resulting solution in terms of R can be converted by simple algebra to the familiar sigmoid expression involving P. A biological argument is given for introducing logistic growth via the simpler DE for R. It is also shown that the sigmoid P may be written in terms of the hyperbolic tangent by a simple translation that is also motivated by a biological argument.

From Manipulation to Abstraction: The Impact of Flexible Decomposition on Numerical Competence in Primary School

This study examines a structured instructional approach to the decomposition and recomposition of large numbers in six primary school classes (three 4th-grade and three 5th-grade, N = 120), using a quasi-experimental pre-test/post-test design with a control group and a four-week delayed post-test. The 12-week intervention follows the Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA) progression. The experimental groups achieved mean gains of 34.0 points (4th grade) and 29.6 points (5th grade) out of 100, against 16.4 and 11.1 points in the control groups (all p < 0.001). The Time x Group interaction in the mixed ANOVA gave partial $η^2$ = 0.931. An ANCOVA with the pre-test as covariate estimated an adjusted difference of 18.25 points, 95% CI [17.59, 18.92], F(1, 117) = 2,978.10, p < 0.001, partial $η^2$ = 0.962. The advantage was present on all five components of the test. At the delayed post-test the experimental groups retained 93.7% of their gain, against 78.6% in the control groups. Internal consistency of the instrument at pre-test was acceptable (Cronbach's $α$ = 0.735). The effects are unusually large, and the limits of the design that bear on their interpretation are discussed.

Probability and statistics in Greece

Official statistics in Greece started as early as 1828 with the first Census. A department of statistics was established in 1861, and the General Statistical Service of Greece was founded in 1925. It was reformed to become the National Statistical Service of Greece in 1953, which was then replaced by the independent Hellenic Statistical Authority in 2010. The science of probability and statistics was essentially introduced in the late 1960s and before 1982. Seven chairs, plus were established in probability and statistics, albeit with various names, at the four Greek universities and ASOEE, which existed then, and six aspirants were elected to the post of professor of the respective chair. Since 1982, when the law abolished the archaic system of chairs, more than 200 PhD holders in probability and statistics or related subjects have been elected or promoted to the new ranks of professor, associate professor, and assistant professor at the 25 public Greek universities, which exist today. Several of these professors or associate professors have been elected to the post of Rector or Vice Rector. Now, probability and statistics, as well as related subjects, are very well treated in Greece. Today, the Greek contribution to these specialties is internationally recognized
