Universal Science of Complexity: Consistent Understanding of Ecological, Living and Intelligent System Dynamics

Abstract

A major challenge of interdisciplinary description of complex system behaviour is whether real systems of higher complexity levels can be understood with at least the same degree of objective, "scientific" rigour and universality as "simple" systems of classical, Newtonian science paradigm. The problem is reduced to that of arbitrary, many-body interaction (unsolved in standard theory). Here we review its causally complete solution, the ensuing concept of complexity and applications. The discovered key properties of dynamic multivaluedness and entanglement give rise to a qualitatively new kind of mathematical structure providing the exact version of real system behaviour. The extended mathematics of complexity contains the truly universal definition of dynamic complexity, randomness (chaoticity), classification of all possible dynamic regimes, and the unifying principle of any system dynamics and evolution, the universal symmetry of complexity. Every real system has a non-zero (and actually high) value of unreduced dynamic complexity determining, in particular, "mysterious" behaviour of quantum systems and relativistic effects causally explained now as unified manifestations of complex interaction dynamics. The observed differences between various systems are due to different regimes and levels of their unreduced dynamic complexity. We outline applications of universal concept of dynamic complexity emphasising cases of "truly complex" systems from higher complexity levels (ecological and living systems, brain operation, intelligence and consciousness, autonomic information and communication systems) and show that the urgently needed progress in social and intellectual structure of civilisation inevitably involves qualitative transition to unreduced complexity understanding (we call it "revolution of complexity").

An event centric approach to modeling quantum systems

We define an event-centric framework for modeling quantum systems whose only modeling elements are classical bits. An event is a correlation between two binary sequences, one representing the observer and one the observed system, and two events are related by a map, itself a sequence, through the XOR operation. We postulate that observers can access only the counts of symbols in events and maps, not their arrangement. Probabilities then follow from counting the compatible microstates, with indistinguishable microstates interfering through a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ sign, so that epistemic indeterminism and quantum spin statistics emerge without postulating Hilbert space or the Born rule. Applied to three scenarios involving spin, the model reproduces the Wigner $d$-matrix and Clebsch-Gordan probabilities in the sectors studied, with no continuous free or fitted parameters and with discrepancies that vanish as $O(1/n)$ in the sequence length $n$. In a Bell test it violates the CHSH inequality and approaches the Tsirelson bound as $n\to\infty$. Because the ontic state is attached to a pair of events, including the measurement context, the framework instantiates neither the single context-independent state space assumed by the Kochen-Specker argument nor the ontological-models framework assumed by the Pusey-Barrett-Rudolph theorem.

Is MOND an effect of cosmic frame-dragging à la Mach?

The physical origin of Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND), which predicts galaxy rotation curves via a single empirical acceleration constant $a_0$ without the need for dark matter, remains unknown. I propose a modified-inertia origin for both MOND's interpolating function and $a_0$ within a framework closely related to Gravitoelectromagnetism, the linearized limit of General Relativity. Following Sciama's model unifying gravity and inertia, which implements Mach's principle and the relativity of acceleration through gravitoelectric induction, I consider an idealized homogeneous universe undergoing constant Hubble expansion. I identify $a_0 \sim H_0^2R_u \sim c^2/R_u$ with the relative recession acceleration of cosmic matter near the horizon, which dominates the cosmological contribution. I show that this scale enters local inertial dynamics only when the relative acceleration of the universe becomes anisotropic and the Rindler horizon is comparable to or larger than the cosmic Hubble horizon, at accelerations of order $a_0$ and below. By the simplest Ansatz for the observer's acceleration-dependent causal volume, accounting for the interplay between the cosmic and Rindler horizons, I derive MOND's simple interpolating function as a modified inertia law without the need to insert it by hand or make any further ad hoc adjustments. Physically, the region brought into causal connection ahead of the accelerating observer by the deformation of the cosmic horizon contributes less inertial drag than is lost from the region removed behind him by the Rindler horizon. This proof of concept motivates the possibility that MOND arises from large-scale linear inertial frame-dragging induced by the expanding universe within General Relativity.

Partially Thermalized eV-Scale Sterile Neutrinos in Dynamical Dark Energy and Non-Flat Cosmologies

We investigate cosmological constraints on a $(3+1)$ neutrino framework containing an additional partially thermalized, eV-scale sterile neutrino alongside the three active species. Rather than assuming full thermalization, we allow the sterile abundance to vary independently through its physical mass $m_s$ and contribution $ΔN_{\rm eff}$ to the effective number of relativistic species. The sterile state is modeled as a thermally distributed non-cold relic with a temperature below that of the active-neutrino background. We consider flat and non-flat $Λ$CDM and $w_0w_a$CDM cosmologies, all including the same $(3+1)ν$ sector. The models are constrained using Planck 2018 CMB data, DESI DR2 BAO, Pantheon+ Type Ia supernovae, a conservative compilation of $fσ_8$ measurements, and the recent H0DN. Oscillation-informed priors are imposed on the active-neutrino mass splittings, while the eV scale sterile-mass range is motivated by short-baseline oscillation searches and global $(3+1)$ analyses. We find that allowing additional freedom in the late-time cosmological background substantially changes the inferred sterile-neutrino sector. The effective sterile mass increases from $m_{s,\rm eff}\sim0.11\pm0.05~{\rm eV}$ in flat $Λ$CDM$+(3+1)ν$ to $\sim0.35\pm0.12~{\rm eV}$ in the non-flat $w_0w_a$CDM$+(3+1)ν$ model. The corresponding sterile abundance shifts from $ΔN_{\rm eff}\lesssim0.1$ to $ΔN_{\rm eff}\simeq0.35\pm0.15$, while remaining well below the fully thermalized limit, $ΔN_{\rm eff}\simeq1$. The non-flat $w_0w_a$CDM models also show $\sim 2.8σ$ preference for open spatial geometry, $Ω_k\simeq0.0045\pm0.0016$, and yield $H_0\simeq70.9\pm0.7~{\rm km\,s^{-1}\,Mpc^{-1}}$ and $S_8\simeq0.785\pm0.015$. These models improve the minimum $χ^2$ by approximately $21$-$25$ relative to flat $Λ$CDM$+(3+1)ν$.
