On the L^p-distorsion of finite quotients of amenable groups

Abstract

We study the L^p-distortion of finite quotients of amenable groups. In particular, for every number p larger or equal than 2, we prove that the l^p-distortion of the finite lamplighter group grows like (\log n)^{1/p}. We also give the asymptotic behavior of the l^p-distortion of finite quotients of certain metabelian polycyclic groups and of the solvable Baumslag-Solitar groups BS(m,1). The proofs are short and elementary.

A new lower bound for the kissing number in 19 dimensions

We prove that the kissing number in 19 dimensions is at least 11948, improving the bound of Cohn and Li by 256. Their odd-sign construction reduces the problem to finding a binary code of length 19 and minimum distance 5 inside a 5-punctured extended binary Golay code. In an explicit model $D$ of this ambient code, the 21 words of weights 3 and 4 are exactly the pairwise differences that such a code must avoid. They span a 10-dimensional subcode $K$. We exhibit a 6-dimensional subcode $M\le K$ for which all 21 words lie in only five cosets of $M$. After identifying $K/M$ with $\mathbb F_2^4$, these five cosets are represented by $Σ=\{e_1,e_2,e_3,e_4,e_1+e_2+e_3+e_4\}$. In the graph on $\mathbb F_2^4$ in which $u$ and $v$ are adjacent when $u+v\inΣ$, the set $Σ$ itself is independent. Lifting its five vertices gives 320 words in $K$, and translating this set through the four cosets of $K$ in $D$ gives a nonlinear code of size 1280 and minimum distance 5.

Strongly log-concave measures and lattices

Let $Λ\subseteq \mathbb{R}^n$ be a full rank lattice with the property that $\det Γ\ge 1$ for all sublattices $Γ\subseteq Λ^*$. We prove that there exists a symmetric random vector $X \in \mathbb{R}^n$ with a smooth, strictly positive density $f : \mathbb{R}^n \to (0, \infty)$ satisfying that (1) $f$ is $α$-strongly log-concave, where $α= 2π/e$, and (2) $X + Λ$ is uniform on $\mathbb{R}^n/Λ$. Moreover, the existence of such a density characterizes this property up to a universal dilation. There are a few consequences of the above. We list some. First, for such lattices we can bound the covering radius \[ μ(Λ, K) = \max_{x\in\mathbb{R}^n}\min_{λ\inΛ} \left\|x-λ\right\|_K \le \sqrt{\frac{2e}π} \cdot \mathbb{E}\,\left\|G\right\|_K \] of a convex body $K \subseteq \mathbb{R}^n$ containing $0$ in its interior, where $G \sim N(0,\mathrm{Id})$. This implies an $O(n \sqrt{\log n})$ bound for the flatness constant and an $O(\log^{3/2} n)$ bound for the subspace flatness constant. We also compare the entire ordered spectrum of the associated flat torus on $Λ^*$ with that of a Gaussian, yielding an alternative proof of the reverse Minkowski theorem.

Affine fractional Orlicz--Sobolev inequalities and optimal star bodies

In this paper, we establish an affine fractional Orlicz--Sobolev inequality by replacing the Euclidean fractional Orlicz seminorm with an energy obtained by minimizing over origin-symmetric star bodies of prescribed volume. Under finite lower and upper power growth assumptions, a subcritical upper growth bound, and a monotonicity condition on $t^{n/s+2}Φ''(t)$, the resulting inequality has the same best constant as its Euclidean counterpart. The power case recovers the affine fractional Sobolev inequality of Haddad and Ludwig with the corresponding Luxemburg normalization. To establish this inequality, we investigate the underlying geometric extremal problem. For every nonzero smooth function of compact support, the existence and uniqueness of an optimal star body are proved under the growth assumptions alone, and its radial function is characterized by an equation involving $Φ(t)+(s/n)tΦ'(t)$. We also establish an anisotropic rearrangement inequality, together with its equality conditions under additional strictness assumptions. Moreover, the normalized local limit is investigated. The optimized energies converge to the local energy, and the radial functions of the minimizing bodies converge uniformly on the sphere. The limiting modular is determined by $\overlineΦ(t)=\int_0^tΦ(τ)\,dτ/τ$. Finally, we compare optimization over star bodies with optimization in the affine orbit.
