Matched-filtering and parameter estimation of ringdown waveforms

Abstract

Using recent results from numerical relativity simulations of non-spinning binary black hole mergers we revisit the problem of detecting ringdown waveforms and of estimating the source parameters, considering both LISA and Earth-based interferometers. We find that Advanced LIGO and EGO could detect intermediate-mass black holes of mass up to about 1000 solar masses out to a luminosity distance of a few Gpc. For typical multipolar energy distributions, we show that the single-mode ringdown templates presently used for ringdown searches in the LIGO data stream can produce a significant event loss (> 10% for all detectors in a large interval of black hole masses) and very large parameter estimation errors on the black hole's mass and spin. We estimate that more than 10^6 templates would be needed for a single-stage multi-mode search. Therefore, we recommend a "two stage" search to save on computational costs: single-mode templates can be used for detection, but multi-mode templates or Prony methods should be used to estimate parameters once a detection has been made. We update estimates of the critical signal-to-noise ratio required to test the hypothesis that two or more modes are present in the signal and to resolve their frequencies, showing that second-generation Earth-based detectors and LISA have the potential to perform no-hair tests.

Global causality constraints in rotating scalar-tensor spacetimes

Modified gravity is often formulated as an effective field theory (EFT), where higher-order corrections parametrize departures from General Relativity. We argue that such corrections should be constrained by the global causal structure of curved spacetime, in addition to the usual flat-space requirements such as positivity and unitarity. We propose that within the domain of validity of the EFT, the onset of closed timelike curves should not happen in a parametrically more accessible region than in the corresponding GR background. We test this diagnostic in the quadratic k-essence sector of scalar-tensor gravity. For stationary and axisymmetric spacetimes, the invariant test for closed axial orbits is the sign of the azimuthal component of the metric \(g_{φφ}\). We supplement this test by requiring a local time function in the space of Killing vectors. We apply these conditions to quadratic k-essence on Kerr--(A)dS backgrounds, with and without scalar charge. The zero-charge branch is exact Kerr--(A)dS, and we treat the charged branch perturbatively in scalar charge and in Hartle--Thorne slow rotation. Expanding for small spin \(χ=a/(GM)\ll1\), frame dragging begins at \(\mathcal O(χ)\), while the quadrupolar backreaction relevant for circular closed timelike curves enters at second order in both rotation and charge. We find that, in the truncation used here, any occurrence of \(g_{φφ}<0\) also lies outside EFT control. A higher-order calculation or a fully nonlinear treatment is therefore needed. Finally, we discuss how quasinormal modes and black-hole echoes could probe such causal structure.

Accretion of a Plasma Vlasov Gas onto a Reissner-Nordström Black Hole

We develop a steady-state, spherically symmetric accretion model for a two-component plasma Vlasov gas in the background of a Reissner--Nordström black hole. Analytical expressions in parametric form for the critical angular momentum and impact parameter are derived for each species, leading to a rigorous partition of the absorption and scattering domains in phase space. For both monoenergetic and Jüttner distributions, electromagnetic attraction enhances, while repulsion suppresses, the particle number density, energy density, pressure and accretion rates of individual charged components relative to the neutral case. After proper normalization, the total physical quantities of the plasma (under non-extreme conditions) can be expressed exactly, or to high accuracy, as weighted averages of the two species. When the two components share identical distribution functions, accretion drives the Reissner--Nordström black hole naturally toward the Schwarzschild limit---a charge evolution that is absent in neutral-gas models. Numerical results further reveal that near the horizon the radial pressure is significantly smaller than the tangential pressure, sharply distinguishing the Vlasov gas from a perfect fluid.

Investigation of Circular Photon Orbits in Naked Singularity Spacetimes from a Geometric Method

Circular photon orbits play a pivotal role in both gravitational theories and astronomical observations. However, the properties of circular photon orbits in naked singularity spacetimes remain insufficiently explored and deserve in-depth investigation. The present work is dedicated to a comprehensive study of the features of circular photon orbits in naked singularity spacetimes. Notably, a geometric approach is employed to investigate these orbits, in which the framework of optical geometry together with its intrinsic curvatures plays a crucial role. We analyze the existence of circular photon orbits through the intrinsic geodesic curvature, and then examine the numbers of stable and unstable circular orbits, as well as the topological invariant associated with circular photon orbits. By examining various classes of naked singularity spacetimes, we obtain a general conclusion regarding circular photon orbits that holds for the most of spherically symmetric naked singularity spacetimes: the total number of circular photon orbits is an even integer ($\textit{N} = \text{2}\textit{k}$), consisting of $\textit{k}$ stable orbits and $\textit{k}$ unstable orbits in equal proportion. A mathematical proof of this conclusion is also provided in the present work. Furthermore, a comparison with other categories of spacetimes reveals that the conclusions regarding the number of circular photon orbits in naked singularity spacetimes agree with those obtained for compact object spacetimes without naked singularities, indicating that the number of circular photon orbits is primarily governed by the presence of event horizons rather than spacetime singularities.
