VISIR/VLT mid-infrared imaging of Seyfert nuclei: Nuclear dust emission and the Seyfert-2 dichotomy

Abstract

Half of the Seyfert-2 galaxies escaped detection of broad lines in their polarised spectra observed so far. Some authors have suspected that these non-HBLRs contain real Sy2 nuclei without intrinsic broad line region hidden behind a dust torus. If this were true, then their nuclear structure would fundamentally differ from that of Sy2s with polarised broad lines: in particular, they would not be explained by orientation-based AGN unification. Further arguments for two physically different Sy2 populations have been derived from the warm and cool IRAS F25/F60 ratios. These ratios, however, refer to the entire host galaxies and are unsuitable to conclusively establish the absence of a nuclear dust torus. Instead, a study of the Seyfert-2 dichotomy should be performed on the basis of nuclear properties only. Here we present the first comparison between [OIII] 5007A and mid-infrared imaging at matching spatial resolution. Exploring the Seyfert-2 dichotomy we find that the distributions of nuclear mid-infrared/[OIII] luminosity ratios are indistinguishable for Sy1s and Sy2s with and without detected polarised broad lines and irrespective of having warm or cool IRAS F25/F60 ratios. We find no evidence for the existence of a population of real Sy2s with a deficit of nuclear dust emission. Our results suggest 1) that all Seyfert nuclei possess the same physical structure including the putative dust torus and 2) that the cool IRAS colours are caused by a low contrast of AGN to host galaxy. Then the Seyfert-2 dichotomy is explained in part by unification of non-HBLRs with narrow-line Sy1s and to a larger rate by observational biases caused by a low AGN/host contrast and/or an unfavourable scattering geometry.

The Distance of 4 kpc to the SNR CTB 109/AXP 1E 2259+586 system

We suggest a revised distance to the supernova remnant (SNR) G109.1-1.0 (CTB 109) and its associated anomalous X-ray pulsar (AXP) 1E 2259+586 by analyzing 21cm HI-line and 12CO-line spectra of CTB 109, HII region Sh 152, and the adjacent molecular cloud complex. CTB 109 has been established to be interacting with a large molecular cloud (recession velocity at v=-55 km s^-1). The highest radial velocities of absorption features towards CTB 109 (-56 km s^-1) and Sh 152 (-65 km s^-1) are larger than the recombination line velocity (-50 km s^-1) of Sh 152 demonstrating the velocity reversal within the Perseus arm. The molecular cloud has cold HI column density large enough to produce HI self-absorption (HISA) and HI narrow self-absorption (HINSA) if it was at the near side of the velocity reversal. Absence of both HISA and HINSA indicates that the cloud is at the far side of the velocity reversal within the Perseus Arm, so we obtain a distance for CTB 109 of 4+/-0.8 kpc. The new distance still leads to a normal explosion energy for CTB 109/AXP 1E 2259+586.

Dynamical evolution of rotating dense stellar systems with embedded black holes

Evolution of self-gravitating rotating dense stellar systems (e.g. globular clusters, galactic nuclei) with embedded black holes is investigated. The interaction between the black hole and stellar component in differential rotating flattened systems is followed. The interplay between velocity diffusion due to relaxation and black hole star accretion is investigated together with cluster rotation using 2D+1 Fokker-Planck numerical methods. The models can reproduce the Bahcall-Wolf solution $f \propto E^{1/4}$ ($n \propto r^{-7/4}$) inside the zone of influence of the black hole. Gravo-gyro and gravothermal instabilities conduce the system to a faster evolution leading to shorter collapse times with respect to the non-rotating systems. Angular momentum transport and star accretion support the development of central rotation in relaxation time scales. We explore system dissolution due to mass-loss in the presence of an external tidal field (e.g. globular clusters in galaxies).

Multiband optical surface brightness profile decompositions of the Seyfert galaxies Mrk 79 and NGC 5548

We present preliminary results of the Johnson-Cousins (U)BVRI surface brightness profile decompositions of the Seyfert galaxies Mrk 79 and NGC 5548. The profiles were modelled as a sum of a Gaussian law for the nucleus, a Sersic law for the bulge and an exponent law for the disk. A flat bar was added to the model profile of Mrk 79. The parameters and the total magnitudes of the structural components were derived.
