Optimal Subgroups and Applications to Nilpotent Elements

Abstract

Let G be a reductive group acting on an affine variety X, let x in X be a point whose G-orbit is not closed, and let S be a G-stable closed subvariety of X which meets the closure of the G-orbit of x but does not contain x. In this paper, we study G.R. Kempf's optimal class Omega_G(x,S) of cocharacters of G attached to the point x; in particular, we consider how this optimality transfers to subgroups of G. Suppose K is a G-completely reducible subgroup of G which fixes x, and let H = C_G(K)^0. Our main result says that the H-orbit of x is also not closed, and the optimal class Omega_H(x,S) for H simply consists of the cocharacters in Omega_G(x,S) which evaluate in H. We apply this result in the case that G acts on its Lie algebra via the adjoint representation to obtain some new information about cocharacters associated with nilpotent elements in good characteristic.

Unsolved Problems in Group Theory. The Kourovka Notebook

This is a collection of open problems in group theory proposed by hundreds of mathematicians from all over the world. It has been published every 2--4 years since 1965. This is the 21st edition, which contains 150 new problems and a number of comments on problems from the previous editions. Problems with $\boldsymbol{\displaystyle{\sharp }}$ have AI-proposed solutions that are not yet confirmed by mathematicians and should be regarded as unsolved. Anyone interested is invited to look into such an AI solution and either confirm it or refute. On algebraic and arithmetic properties of monoids of product-$K$ sequences

Let $G$ be a group and $K$ be a normal subgroup of $G$. A sequence over $G$ is a finite collection of terms from $G$, where repetition is allowed, and the order is disregarded. A product-$K$ sequence is a sequence whose terms can be ordered such that their product in $G$ belongs to $K$. The set $\mathcal B_K (G)$ of all product-$K$ sequences over $G$ forms a monoid, called the monoid of product-$K$ sequences, under the operation of sequence concatenation. In this paper, we investigate the algebraic and arithmetic properties of the monoid $\mathcal B_K (G)$. Among our main results, we provide precise characterizations of when $\mathcal B_K (G)$ satisfies key properties, namely being (transfer) Krull, a (seminormal) C-monoid, or (half-)factorial. After that, we study the Isomorphism Problem for monoids of product-$K$ sequences. Our results generalize existing frameworks, making them applicable to both the classical abelian and the more recently developed non-abelian settings.

Near full groups of bounded type, II

We study when a finitely generated group of bounded type contains the AF alternating group of the tail groupoid of its defining Bratteli diagram. This containment is an input to the full group completion theorem of Part I. We give sufficient conditions for this containment, in which selectors separate inherited diagonal actions, and an exact criterion for finite regular coverings. In the covering case, the intersection with the AF alternating group is the centralizer of the deck transformations commuting with the adjoined AF permutations. The formula classifies all subgroups between the canonical lift of the base AF alternating group and the AF alternating group of the covering. In particular, the lift is maximal exactly when the deck group has prime order, and cyclic coverings yield finitely generated groups whose intersections with the AF alternating group of the covering realize these subgroups. We identify fragmentations that produce the required selectors. For periodic fragmentations of the directed generator in the modified Fabrykowski--Gupta group, surjectivity of the activity subspace onto each pair of consecutive coordinates gives containment with absorption delay at most two. A five-periodic example also satisfies this condition, although its activity subspace has dual distance two. The original four-periodic fragmentation group has index four in its topological full group.
