Invariant rigid geometric structures and smooth projective factors

Abstract

We consider actions of non-compact simple Lie groups preserving an analytic rigid geometric structure of algebraic type on a compact manifold. The structure is not assumed to be unimodular, so an invariant measure may not exist. Ergodic stationary measures always exist, and when such a measure has full support, we show the following. 1) Either the manifold admits a smooth equivariant map onto a homogeneous projective variety, defined on an open dense conull invariant set, or the Lie algebra of the Zariski closure of the Gromov representation of the fundamental group contains a Lie subalgebra isomorphic to the Lie algebra of the acting group. As a corollary, a smooth non-trivial homogeneous projective factor does exist whenever the fundamental group of $M$ admits only virtually solvable linear representations, and thus in particular when $M$ is simply connected, regardless of the real rank. 2) There exist explicit examples showing that analytic rigid actions of certain simple groups (of real rank one) may indeed fail to have a smooth projective factor. 3) It is possible to generalize Gromov's theorem on the algebraic hull of the representation of the fundamental group of the manifold to the case of analytic rigid non-unimodular structures, for actions of simple groups of any real rank. An important ingredient in the proofs is a generalization of Gromov's centralizer theorem beyond the case of invariant measures.

Ergodic Theorems for Homogeneous Dilations

Let $ν$ be a compactly supported probability measure on $\R^d$ with Fourier dimension greater than one. We prove an almost-everywhere ergodic theorem for the corresponding dilated averages under ergodic measure-preserving $\R^d$-actions. If $a=\dimFν$, the result holds on $L^p$ for $1+1/a<p<\infty$. The proof combines Rubio de Francia's Euclidean maximal theorem with a transference argument and a dense class obtained by spectral localization away from the origin. Applications include curved hypersurfaces and averaging measures carried by Salem sets, including Brownian images and explicit Diophantine constructions.

From the Lagrange Triangle to the Figure Eight Choreography: Proof of Marchal's Conjecture

For the three body problem with equal masses, we prove that the most symmetric continuation class of Lagrange's equilateral triangle solution, also referred to as the $P_{12}$ family of Marchal, contains the remarkable figure eight choreography discovered by Moore in 1993, and proven to exist by Chenciner and Montgomery in 2000. This settles a conjecture of Marchal which dates back to the 1999 conference on Celestial Mechanics in Evanston Illinois, celebrating Donald Saari's 60th birthday.

Partially hyperbolic geodesic flow via conformal deformation

This paper presents a new construction of non-Anosov Partially Hyperbolic Geodesic flows. Our construction is closely related to the construction made by Carneiro and Pujals, the novelty is the use of conformal deformations to produce the examples. Some of the necessary conditions appear more naturally and are easier to check. Besides that, we could enumerate the conditions required to produce partially hyperbolic geodesic flow examples. We show how to produce examples with metrics that are non-positively curved and with a finner analysis we can prove ergodicity for the Liouville measure and uniqueness of the measure of maximal entropy. These examples lie on the boundary of Anosov metrics, allowing us to also produce metrics with partially hyperbolic geodesic flows and conjugate points.
