The rotational broadening of V395 Car - implications on compact object's mass

Abstract

CONTEXT: The masses previously obtained for the X-ray binary 2S0921-630 inferred a compact object that was either a high-mass neutron star or low-mass black-hole, but used a previously published value for the rotational broadening (vsini) with large uncertainties. AIMS: We aim to determine an accurate mass for the compact object through an improved measurement of the secondary star's projected equatorial rotational velocity. METHODS: We have used UVES echelle spectroscopy to determine the vsini of the secondary star (V395 Car) in the low-mass X-ray binary 2S0921-630 by comparison to an artificially broadened spectral-type template star. In addition, we have also measured vsini from a single high signal-to-noise ratio absorption line profile calculated using the method of Least-Squares Deconvolution (LSD). RESULTS: We determine vsini to lie between 31.3+/-0.5km/s to 34.7+/-0.5km/s (assuming zero and continuum limb darkening, respectively) in disagreement with revious results based on intermediate resolution spectroscopy obtained with the 3.6m NTT. Using our revised vsini value in combination with the secondary star's radial velocity gives a binary mass ratio of 0.281+/-0.034. Furthermore, assuming a binary inclination angle of 75 degrees gives a compact object mass of 1.37+/-0.13Mo. CONCLUSIONS: We find that using relatively low-resolution spectroscopy can result in systemic uncertainties in the measured vsini values obtained using standard methods. We suggest the use of LSD as a secondary, reliable check of the results as LSD allows one to directly discern the shape of the absorption line profile. In the light of the new vsini measurement, we have revised down the compact object's mass, such that it is now compatible with a canonical neutron star mass.

In Flight Determination of the Plate Scale of the EIT

Using simultaneous observations of the MDI and EIT instruments on board the SoHO spacecraft, we determined in flight the plate scale of the EIT. We found a value of 2.629+-0.001 arc seconds per pixel, in fair agreement with the 2.627+-0.001 arc seconds per pixel value deduced from recent laboratory measurements of the focal length, and much higher by 7 sigma than the 2.622 arc seconds per pixel value of the pre-flight calibrations. The plate scale is found to be constant across the field of view, confirming the negligible distortion level predicted by the theoretical models of the EIT. Furthermore, the 2 sigma difference between our results and the latest laboratory measurements, although statistically small, may confirm a recent work suggesting that the solar photospheric radius may be 0.5 Mm lower than the classically adopted value of 695.99 Mm.

Revised dynamics or dark matter in galactic and extra galactic scales?

Allowing the energy of a gravitational field to serve partially as its own source allows gravitating bodies to exhibit stronger fields, as if they were more massive. Depending on degree of compaction of the body, the field could be one to five times larger than the newtonian field. This is a comfortable range of increase in field strength and may prove to be of convenience in the study of velocity curves of spirals, of velocity dispersions in clusters of galaxies and in interpreting the Tully-Fisher or Faber-Jackson relations in galaxies or systems of galaxies. The revised gravitation admits of superposition principle but only approximately in systems whose components are widely separated. The revised dynamics admits of the equivalence principle in that, the effective force acting on a test particle is derived from a potential, and could be eliminated in a freely falling frame of reference

Primordial Non-Gaussianity in Multi-Scalar Inflation

We give a concise formula for the non-Gaussianity of the primordial curvature perturbation generated on super-horizon scales in multi-scalar inflation model without assuming slow-roll conditions. This is an extension of our previous work. Using this formula, we study the generation of non-Gaussianity for the double inflation models in which the slow-roll conditions are temporarily violated after horizon exit, and we show that the non-linear parameter $f_{NL}$ for such models is suppressed by the slow-roll parameters evaluated at the time of horizon exit.
