Strings in SU(N) gauge theories in 2+1 dimensions: beyond the fundamental representation

Abstract

We calculate energies and tensions of closed k-strings in (2+1)-dimensional SU(N) gauge theories with N=4,5,6,8. When we study the dependence of the ground state energy on the string length, we find that it is well described by a Nambu-Goto (NG) free bosonic string for large lengths. At shorter lengths we see deviations which we fit, and this allows us to control the systematic error involved in extracting the tension. We compare the resulting string tensions with Casimir scaling, which we find to be lower than our data by 1%-4%. Extrapolating our results to N=oo we see that our data fits more naturally to 1/N rather than 1/N^2 corrections. Finally, we see that the full spectrum of the k-string states falls into sectors that belong to particular irreducible representations of SU(N).

Nucleon Parton Distribution Functions from Boosted Correlations in the Coulomb gauge

Recently, a novel approach has been proposed to compute parton distributions through the use of boosted correlators fixed in the Coulomb gauge from lattice QCD, within the framework of Large-Momentum Effective Theory (LaMET). This approach circumvents the need for Wilson lines, potentially enhancing the efficiency and accuracy of lattice calculations. In this work, we present the first exploratory implementation of the Coulomb gauge method for calculating nucleon unpolarized, helicity, and transversity parton distribution functions (PDFs). The calculations are performed on a Highly-Improved-Staggered-Quark ensemble with lattice spacing $a = 0.06$ fm, volume $L_s^3 \times L_t=48^3\times 64$, and valence pion mass $m_π=300$ MeV, employing boosted nucleon states with momenta up to 3.04 GeV. Our lattice predictions for the valence-quark PDFs -- extracted from the real part of the correlators -- show good convergence with increasing nucleon momentum and are compatible with the most recent global analyses for all spin structures. On the other hand, the full-quark-channel PDFs obtained from the imaginary part of the correlators exhibit discrepancies between the two large nucleon momenta considered, although the results at the higher momentum are consistent with phenomenology. The discrepancies are likely driven by stronger excited-state contamination in the imaginary matrix elements, which is consistent with the observation in the literature. Overall, this work demonstrates the efficacy of the Coulomb gauge approach for nucleon PDFs and serves as a benchmark for its broader applications.

Continuum limit of a qubit-regularized SU(3) lattice gauge theory on a plaquette chain

We show that a simple qubit-regularized $\mathrm{SU}(3)$ lattice gauge theory on a plaquette chain admits a continuum limit with massive gauge-invariant excitations, providing a minimal toy model of strong interactions without quarks. By mapping the plaquette-chain Hamiltonian to the three-state quantum clock model in a magnetic field, we demonstrate that the theory can be tuned to a continuum limit governed at short distances by the $\mathbb{Z}_3$ parafermion conformal field theory, which serves as the ultraviolet fixed point. A small relevant magnetic perturbation then drives the system to a massive continuum quantum field theory in the infrared, featuring relativistic particles. In this continuum theory we compute two universal ratios: the mass ratio of the lightest massive particles with opposite charge conjugation, $m^{-}/m^{+} = 1.459(2)$, and $\sqrtσ/m^{+} = 0.2648(2)$, where $σ$ denotes the string tension between a static quark and antiquark.

Hamiltonian framework for Chiral Gauge Theories on a Disk Boundary

I propose a Hamiltonian framework for chiral gauge theories (CGT) based on a Euclidean formulation which uses 2n dimensional chiral fermions on the boundary of a 2n+1 dimensional disk. In the original Euclidean formulation, boundary gauge fields were extended into the bulk using $2n + 1$ dimensional gauge field equations of motion (EOM) which creates a bottleneck for constructing a Hamiltonian. I present an alternate proposal for extending the gauge fields into the bulk that is compatible with both a Hamiltonian framework and a Euclidean path integral. Applying this to Abelian gauge fields produces exact expressions of interior fields as a functional of the boundary fields, which can be directly used in a Hamiltonian formulation. Euclidean analysis of the new gauge field extension shows that it can preserve the non-perturbative content of the original construction, including the behavior of topological charge, associated chiral fermion zero modes and an absence of the strong CP problem when applied to the Standard Model. This construction opens up a route to a Hamiltonian treatment and future quantum simulation of CGTs on a disk boundary.
