Surgery description of colored knots

Abstract

The pair (K,r) consisting of a knot K and a surjective map r from the knot group onto a dihedral group is said to be a p-colored knot. D. Moskovich conjectured that for any odd prime p there are exactly p equivalence classes of p-colored knots up to surgery along unknots in the kernel of the coloring. We show that there are at most 2p equivalence classes. This is a vast improvement upon the previous results by Moskovich for p=3, and 5, with no upper bound given in general. T. Cochran, A. Gerges, and K. Orr, in "Dehn surgery equivalence relations of 3-manifolds", define invariants of the surgery equivalence class of a closed 3-manifold M in the context of bordisms. By taking M to be 0-framed surgery of the 3-sphere along K we may define Moskovich's colored untying invariant in the same way as the Cochran-Gerges-Orr invariants. This bordism definition of the colored untying invariant will be then used to establish the upper bound.

Compact quotients of homogeneous spaces and homotopy theory of sphere bundles

A reductive homogeneous space $G/H$ is always diffeomorphic to the normal bundle of an orbit of a maximal compact subgroup of $G$. We prove that if $G/H$ admits compact quotients, then the sphere bundle associated to this normal bundle is fiber-homotopically trivial. We deduce that many reductive homogeneous spaces do not admit compact quotients, such as the complex spheres $\mathrm{O}(n+1,\mathbb{C})/\mathrm{O}(n,\mathbb{C})$ for all $n \notin \{1,3,7\}$, or $\mathrm{SL}(n,\mathbb{R})/\mathrm{SL}(m,\mathbb{R})$ for all $n>m>1$, which solves conjectures of T. Kobayashi from the early 1990s. We also prove that if the pseudo-Riemannian hyperbolic space $\mathbf{H}^{p,q}$ of signature $(p,q)$ admits compact quotients, then $p$ must be divisible by at least $2^{\lfloor q/2\rfloor}$.

Merge Trees of Length-Filtered Lattice Knot Spaces

We study lattice-filtered move graphs as finite-state models for knot types under a length cap. At level $N$, vertices are lattice polygons of a fixed knot type with length at most $N$, modulo orientation-preserving lattice isometries, and edges are local moves. The first level at which two initial components become connected defines a discrete merge scale; after subtracting the birth level it is an ultrapseudometric. For the standard BFACF moves on the simple cubic lattice, the theorem of Janse van Rensburg and Whittington gives connectivity without a cap; our question is the least cap connecting a prescribed pair, and explicit BFACF paths serve as finite PL isotopy certificates. We completely determine the minimal-layer merge trees of the amphichiral knots $4_1$ and $6_3$. The $152$ minimal $4_1$ classes form four components of sizes $58,58,18,18$ at $N=30$ and a single component at $N=32$, so the merge tree is $4\to1$ with barrier $2$. The $148$ minimal $6_3$ classes form twelve components at $N=40$, exchanged in pairs by reflection; at $N=42$ they merge into two mirror components, each with $74$ minimal classes and $12337$ states, and a verified path joins them at $N=44$. Hence the merge tree is $12\to2\to1$ with possible barriers $0,2,4$. Independently verified seed-to-mirror certificates realize the extremal barriers $2$ for $4_1$ and $4$ for $6_3$. Checks for the trefoil, the five-crossing prime knots and composite trefoils are included as reproducibility tests.

Planar Contact Structures with Calabi-Yau Fillings and Topological Quantum Computation

We study planar openbooks obtained by lifting braids through branched covers of D^2, together with the quantum operations in the Ising representation. We give a criterion for the Stein fillings to be Calabi-Yau (CY). Among positive factorizations of a fixed monodromy, a CY one has minimal length and its filling minimizes χand b_2. Applied to Baykur's recent examples, this gives a planar contact 3-manifold with infinitely many non-homeomorphic CY fillings, the cover there having degree \ge 6. At degree 4 a single CY filling forces every filling to be CY, and in one case the filling is unique; at degree \le 3 it is unique, and CY under a mild condition. Admissible cuts of D^2 decompose the openbook into subopenbooks. Every positive factorization then localizes, and the CY condition holds exactly when it holds locally. The state space is then a direct sum of tensor products indexed by the compatible parity choices, with at most two qubits per factor when the pieces have degree $\le 4$, the same range in which the CY condition depends only on the monodromy. For one degree 4 cover, the points, lines and flags of the two-qubit doily are realized by its subopenbooks. Fifteen liftable braids there share the same quantum operation and Stein filling, and are separated only by the subopenbook systems they admit. A choice of tensor-product structure is thus carried by the lift, not by the braid group representation, suggesting a link between contact topology and quantum entanglement.
