Eigenvalue estimates for the scattering problem associated to the sine-Gordon equation

Abstract

One of the difficulties associated with the scattering problems arising in connection with integrable systems is that they are frequently non-self-adjoint, making it difficult to determine where the spectrum lies. In this paper, we consider the problem of locating and counting the discrete eigenvalues associated with the scattering problem for which the sine-Gordon equation is the isospectral flow. In particular, suppose that we take an initially stationary pulse for the sine-Gordon equation, with a profile that has either one extremum point of height less than pi and topological charge 0, or is monotone with topological charge +-1. Then we show that the point spectrum lies on the unit circle and is simple. Furthermore, we give a count of the number of eigenvalues. This result is an analog of that of Klaus and Shaw for the Zakharov-Shabat scattering problem. We also relate our results, as well as those of Klaus and Shaw, to the Krein stability theory for symplectic matrices. In particular we show that the scattering problem associated to the sine-Gordon equation has a symplectic structure, and under the above conditions the point eigenvalues have a definite Krein signature, and are thus simple and lie on the unit circle.

Optimal Hardy weights for the fractional discrete Dirichlet Laplacian on the half-line

For positive powers of the discrete Dirichlet Laplacian $(-Δ_{\mathrm{D}})^σ$, non-trivial Hardy weights exist if and only if $0<σ<3/2$. For $0<σ\leq 1$, an explicit optimal Hardy weight for $(-Δ_{\mathrm{D}})^σ$ was obtained by Das and de la Fuente-Fernández. Their ground state argument does not apply when $1<σ<3/2$, because the off-diagonal matrix entries of $(-Δ_{\mathrm{D}})^σ$ are no longer all non-positive. Nevertheless, we show that their result is true for the entire subcriticality range $0<σ<3/2$. For $1<σ<3/2$, our argument combines the factorisation $$(-Δ_{\mathrm{D}})^σ=\nabla_{\mathrm{D}}^{*}(-Δ_{\mathrm{N}})^{σ-1}\nabla_{\mathrm{D}},$$ where $\nabla_{\mathrm{D}}$ and $-Δ_{\mathrm{N}}$ are the discrete Dirichlet gradient and the discrete Neumann Laplacian, respectively, with a suitable two-term ground state representation. In addition, we use these arguments to derive another explicit family of optimal Hardy weights for any $σ\in(0,3/2)$.

Lower bounds on Steklov eigenfunctions for a class of curvilinear polygons

Steklov eigenfunctions, $\{ϕ_{σ_j}\}_{j=0}^\infty$, are the eigenfunctions of the Dirichlet to Neumann map on a bounded domain with eigenvalue $σ_j$. This paper considers Steklov eigenfunctions and eigenvalues on a family of curvilinear polygons, $Ω_α$ whose boundaries are smooth away from a single corner of angle $α$. We (i) prove optimal lower bounds on the decay of the harmonic extension, $u_{σ_j}$, of $ϕ_{σ_j}$ away from the boundary of $Ω_α$ and (ii) give optimal lower bounds on the degree to which the high energy Steklov spectrum of $Ω_α\setminus H_1$ may differ from that of $Ω_α\setminus H_0$ when $H_1$ and $H_0$ are isometric. This shows that the corresponding estimates in recent work by the authors together with Malagutti are optimal. The proof in this paper was obtained through an interaction with ChatGPT 6 Astra: While writing the work with Malagutti, the authors became curious about optimal error bounds for the difference between the Steklov spectra on a curvilinear polygon, $P$, and the spectrum of any operator which knows only local information about $\partial P$. The authors suggested to ChatGPT to remove two isometric, smooth domains from a curvilinear polygon. ChatGPT suggested the ideas for a proof based on a regularized trace and the singularity in the kernel of the DtN map near a corner. The authors then suggested a simpler, conformal approach, the method for handling small angles, and the idea to obtain lower bounds on Steklov eigenfunctions. The paper is entirely written by the authors and the argument has been significantly modified, clarified, and simplified from the ChatGPT ideas.

Pólya's conjecture for Neumann eigenvalues of spherical shells

We prove the strict Pólya inequality for Neumann eigenvalues of spherical shells in every dimension $d\ge2$, for every radius ratio and every positive energy. The proof also covers balls. For shells, the excess over the leading Weyl term has a positive lower bound depending only on dimension. Above explicit frequency thresholds independent of the radius ratio, we obtain a surplus of boundary order. These estimates remain uniform as the hole shrinks or the shell becomes thin. We compare weighted sampling errors for inverse radial actions while retaining the removed volume exactly. The proof is entirely analytic and requires no computer-assisted verification.
