Generalized vorticity in transitional quantum turbulence

Abstract

Transition to condensate state in the degenerate gas of bosons is studied using the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. It is shown that adiabatic invariance of an enstrophy (mean squared vorticity) based on a generalized vorticity $curl (|ψ|^2 {\bf v})/|ψ|^2$, controls dynamics of the transitional turbulence just before formation of the condensate with its tangles of quantized vortices ($|ψ|^2 {\bf v}$ is the weighted velocity field defined on the macroscopic wave function $ψ$). Scaling of the angle-averaged occupation number spectrum, $N_k \sim k^{-1}$, has been obtained for the free developing transitional turbulence for the weak nonlinear (and completely disordered) initial conditions. Results of the three-dimensional numerical simulations have been used to support the theoretical consideration.

Zeeman Shift and Injection Currents under Light Irradiation

The conversion of light into electrical currents enables energy harvesting and photodetection. Conventional second-order dc photocurrents are driven by the electric component of light through electric-dipole coupling and require broken inversion symmetry. Here, we show that the electric and magnetic components of light jointly generate Zeeman shift and injection currents. Using quantum perturbation theory, we derive explicit microscopic expressions for their conductivity tensors. We systematically classify the symmetry constraints on these responses and show how they differ from those governing conventional photocurrents. In particular, both responses can occur in centrosymmetric systems with spin-orbit coupling or noncollinear magnetic order, irrespective of time-reversal symmetry. A centrosymmetric kagome model exhibits broadband responses. First-principles calculations for Mn$_3$Sn further predict Zeeman injection and shift current densities of $10^{2}$-$10^{3}~\mathrm{A/m^{2}}$ and $1$-$10~\mathrm{A/m^{2}}$, respectively, under illumination with an electric-field amplitude $E=10^{4}~\mathrm{V/m}$. These magnitudes place both currents within experimental reach.

Electronic structure of a persistent excitonic fluid far beyond the Mott limit

Excitons are conventionally expected to destabilize at high photoexcitation densities, as screening weakens the electron-hole attraction. Recent studies, however, challenge this paradigm, suggesting that excitons generated by strong optical pumping can remain stable even beyond the onset of population inversion. Here, using time- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy on 2D hybrid perovskites, we provide direct evidence for such a high-density excitonic state, characterized by a distinctive Mexican-hat dispersion. Remarkably, this excitonic band reconstruction endures for orders of magnitude longer than the optical coherence time, revealing a population-sustained electronic structure that survives well into the incoherent regime. The excitonic resonance also persists far beyond optical saturation, at densities where exciton wavefunctions strongly overlap. Our findings reveal a long-lived, high-density quantum fluid of excitons with characteristics reminiscent of a BCS condensate, an electronic structure markedly different from that of the dilute limit.

Occupancy Driven Phase Transitions in Gapped Systems

Systems characterized by an energy gap between the ground state and excited states support a growing number of thermal excitations upon raising the temperature. Provided these excitations interact with each other, their number affects the size of the energy gap akin to a harmonic oscillator where the oscillation frequency is damping dependent. Here we show that once a critical number of excitations is reached, the excitation population becomes thermodynamically unstable and the system transitions between two states. This transition is marked by a divergence in the specific heat, which does not have to be accompanied by an order parameter, nor by the full closure of the gap. We illustrate the thermodynamics using a simple two level system and superfluid $^4$He as examples, and we argue that the hidden order transition in URu$_2$Si$_2$ is an example of such an occupancy driven transition in the absence of an order parameter.
