Geometry of moving planes

Abstract

The concept of number and its generalization has played a central role in the development of mathematics over many centuries and many civilizations. Noteworthy milestones in this long and arduous process were the developments of the real and complex numbers which have achieved universal acceptance. Serious attempts have been made at further extensions, such as Hamiltons quaternions, Grassmann's exterior algebra and Clifford's geometric algebra. By examining the geometry of moving planes, we show how new mathematics is within reach, if the will to learn these powerful methods can be found.

A Tight-binding Approach for Computing Subwavelength Guided Modes in Crystals with Line Defects

In this paper, we develop a framework for computing subwavelength guided modes in high-contrast periodic media with line defects, based on a tight-binding approximation. The physical problem is formulated as an eigenvalue problem for the Helmholtz equation with high-contrast parameters. By employing layer potential theory on unbounded domains, we characterize the subwavelength frequencies via the quasi-periodic capacitance matrix. Our main contribution is the proof of exponential decay of the off-diagonal elements of the associated full and quasi-periodic capacitance matrices. These decay properties provide error bounds for the banded approximation of the capacitance matrices, thereby enabling a tight-binding approach for computing the spectral properties of subwavelength resonators with non-compact defects. Numerical experiments illustrate the decay and compare full and banded capacitance matrices for defect and dimerized interface configurations.

Widom asymptotics for spatial compressions of Schrödinger spectral projections

We establish a Widom trace formula for spatial compressions of exact spectral projections of semiclassical Schrödinger operators. The potential is smooth near a compact classically allowed region, and the observation domain lies strictly inside that region. For every continuous spectral function with positive power decay at both endpoints, we obtain a trace formula at scale $h^{1-n}\log h^{-1}$ whose coefficient separates into a boundary integral and a universal spectral functional. This yields the exact von Neumann and Rényi entanglement asymptotics for every fixed positive order, and proves their universal ratios to the particle-number variance. The proof combines commutator estimates in every fixed positive Schatten class with a local trace formula obtained from a boundary-adapted normal form and a Hardy model. In dimensions $n\ge2$, a positive partition and the known variance asymptotic control the grazing contribution; in one dimension all boundary Fermi points are transverse. A harmonic-oscillator counterexample shows that continuity and weighted integrability alone are insufficient for the trace formula.
