On Floer homology and the Berge conjecture on knots admitting lens space surgeries

Abstract

We complete the first step in a two-part program proposed by Baker, Grigsby, and the author to prove that Berge's construction of knots in the three-sphere which admit lens space surgeries is complete. The first step, which we prove here, is to show that a knot in a lens space with a three-sphere surgery has simple (in the sense of rank) knot Floer homology. The second (conjectured) step involves showing that, for a fixed lens space, the only knots with simple Floer homology belong to a simple finite family. Using results of Baker, we provide evidence for the conjectural part of the program by showing that it holds for a certain family of knots. Coupled with work of Ni, these knots provide the first infinite family of non-trivial knots which are characterized by their knot Floer homology. As another application, we provide a Floer homology proof of a theorem of Berge.

On discrete symmetries of the cube of smoothings

A link diagram with a labeled barycentric subdivision endows the cube of resolutions with an additional combinatorial structure. We study the set of symmetries, preserving this structure. We construct a combinatorial link invariant, based on the symmetries of triangulated smoothings.

A Dehornoy-Type Ordering on Bridge Positions of Links

By a theorem of Hovland, bridge isotopy classes of $n$-bridge positions of links in $S^3$ correspond bijectively to Hilden double cosets $P_{2n}=H_{2n}\backslash B_{2n}/H_{2n}$. We use this correspondence to introduce Dehornoy-type orderings on bridge positions. After fixing a proper complexity function on $B_{2n}$, we assign to each double coset its Dehornoy-minimal braid among the elements of minimal complexity. Comparing these representatives by the Dehornoy order gives a strict total order $\prec_{D,n}$, and comparing them first by complexity and then by the Dehornoy order gives a strict well-order $\triangleleft_{D,n}$. For a link type $L$ and $n\geq b(L)$, we single out a canonical $n$-bridge position $\operatorname{CanPlat}_D^{(n)}(L)$: it is the $\triangleleft_{D,n}$-least element of the set of $n$-bridge positions of $L$, and the $\prec_{D,n}$-least element among those of minimal complexity, and its canonical braid coincides with the globally Dehornoy-minimal braid of minimal complexity representing $L$. We show by an example that, in general, it need not be least for $\prec_{D,n}$ on the whole set. Finally, we show that the fixed-level bridge finiteness conjecture is equivalent to boundedness of the complexities of the canonical representatives, and to the existence of a $\triangleleft_{D,n}$-greatest $n$-bridge position.

Global shadow estimates and Hausdorff measure criteria in higher rank

Patterson--Sullivan measures encode the distribution of orbits of discrete group actions near the boundary. We prove a global shadow lemma for Patterson--Sullivan measures associated to relatively Morse subgroups of higher-rank semisimple Lie groups. The estimate is uniform for shadows centered at arbitrary points in a Gromov model, including points deep in the cuspidal part, and expresses the contribution of each cusp in terms of peripheral growth. This extends the global shadow lemma of Stratmann--Velani for geometrically finite real hyperbolic groups. As applications, we establish local doubling and reverse doubling. Under Zariski density, we give necessary and sufficient criteria for Patterson--Sullivan measures to agree with the associated Hausdorff measures and to be Ahlfors regular. For symmetric linear forms, these criteria hold without Zariski density. We verify the criteria explicitly for cusped Hitchin representations and real-hyperbolic self-joinings.
