Area-expanding embeddings of rectangles

Abstract

We estimate whether there is an embedding from one n-dimensional rectangle into another which expands every k-dimensional area. Our estimate is sharp up to a constant factor in each dimension.

Warped area-minimizing hypersurface and warped product metric

Several metric splitting theorems under spectral Ricci curvature lower bounds have been established in recent years, yet the existing literature mostly yields only isometric direct product decompositions. In some parameter regimes, direct product splitting is even known to fail. In this paper, we study warped (weighted) area-minimizing hypersurfaces and use their variational properties to prove local warped product metric splitting under spectral Ricci curvature conditions. Given a smooth compact connected $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold $(M^n,g)$ with non vanishing homology $H_{n-1}(M;\mathbb Z)$, satisfying our spectral Ricci lower bound, and with dimension $3\le n\le 5$, we consider a nontrivial homological warped area-minimizing hypersurface $Σ$ whose existence follows from classical geometric measure theory. By analyzing the first and second variations of the warped area functional together with a foliation argument, we show that $M$ locally decomposes as a warped product $(-ε,ε)\times_f Σ$, where the warping function is given by $f=u^{-1}$ for the positive weight function $u$ appearing in the spectral Ricci condition. Our work complements the existing splitting theory for spectral Ricci curvature: even in parameter ranges where product type splitting cannot hold, we still obtain local warped product rigidity via weighted minimal hypersurfaces.

Mixed Chern curvature on complete flags

We prove that the complete flag manifold SU(m)/T m-1, with m >= 3 and its standard complex structure, admits no invariant Hermitian metric with constant mixed Chern curvature when the coefficient of the holomorphic sectional curvature is nonzero. This extends the preceding nonexistence result for a particular Wallach metric on SU(3)/T2 to all invariant Hermitian metrics and to complete type-A flags of arbitrary dimension. Curvature evaluations on holomorphic root spheres contradict a necessary trace identity, covering both Kahler and non-Kahler invariant metrics and excluding both zero and nonzero curvature constants.

Isotropy sets of periodic geodesic flows on three dimensional manifolds

A classical theorem of Wadsley states that if all geodesics on a Riemannian manifold M are periodic, then they have a common period, and the geodesic flow induces an S^1-action on the unit tangent bundle. Moreover, a conjecture of Berger asserts that this action is free whenever M is simply connected. In this paper, we investigate the Berger conjecture in dimension three by studying the isotropy set of the S^1-action induced by the geodesic flow. Using Morse theory for the energy functional on the free loop space of M, we establish two results in this direction. First, we show that all isotropy groups of the geodesic flow have odd order. Second, we prove that the geodesic flow either acts freely on the unit tangent bundle $T^1M$ or has at least two singular orbit types. This paper serves as preparation for the subsequent paper The Berger conjecture for three-dimensional manifolds, in which the conjecture is proved in dimension three.
