The enigma of GCIRS 3 - Constraining the properties of the mid-infrared reference star of the central parsec of the Milky Way with optical long baseline interferometry

Abstract

GCIRS3 is the most prominent MIR source in the central pc of the Galaxy. NIR spectroscopy failed to solve the enigma of its nature. The properties of extreme individual objects of the central stellar cluster contribute to our knowledge of star and dust formation close to a supermassive black hole. We initiated an interferometric experiment to understand IRS3 and investigate its properties as spectroscopic and interferometric reference star at 10um. VISIR imaging separates a compact source from diffuse, surrounding emission. The VLTI/MIDI instrument was used to measure visibilities at 10mas resolution of that compact 10um source, still unresolved by a single VLT. Photometry data were added to enable simple SED- and full radiative transfer-models of the data. The luminosity and size estimates show that IRS3 is probably a cool carbon star enshrouded by a complex dust distribution. Dust temperatures were derived. The coinciding interpretation of multiple datasets confirm dust emission at several spatial scales. The IF data resolve the innermost area of dust formation. Despite observed deep silicate absorption towards IRS3 we favor a carbon rich chemistry of the circumstellar dust shell. The silicate absorption most probably takes place in the outer diffuse dust, which is mostly ignored by MIDI measurements. This indicates physically and chemically distinct conditions of the local dust, changing with the distance to IRS3. We have demonstrated that optical long baseline interferometry at infrared wavelengths is an indispensable tool to investigate sources at the Galactic Center. Our findings suggest further studies of the composition of interstellar dust and the shape of the 10um silicate feature at this outstanding region.

Multiband optical surface brightness profile decompositions of the Seyfert galaxies Mrk 79 and NGC 5548

We present preliminary results of the Johnson-Cousins (U)BVRI surface brightness profile decompositions of the Seyfert galaxies Mrk 79 and NGC 5548. The profiles were modelled as a sum of a Gaussian law for the nucleus, a Sersic law for the bulge and an exponent law for the disk. A flat bar was added to the model profile of Mrk 79. The parameters and the total magnitudes of the structural components were derived.

Gamma-ray Constraints on Dark Matter Annihilation into Charged Particles

Dark matter annihilation into charged particles is necessarily accompanied by gamma rays, produced via radiative corrections. Internal bremsstrahlung from the final state particles can produce hard gamma rays up to the dark matter mass, with an approximately model-independent spectrum. Focusing on annihilation into electrons, we compute robust upper bounds on the dark matter self annihilation cross section $<σ_A v >_{e^+e^-}$ using gamma ray data from the Milky Way spanning a wide range of energies, $\sim10^{-3} - 10^4$ GeV. We also compute corresponding bounds for the other charged leptons. We make conservative assumptions about the astrophysical inputs, and demonstrate how our derived bounds would be strengthened if stronger assumptions about these inputs are adopted. The fraction of hard gamma rays near the endpoint accompanying annihilation to $e^+e^-$ is only a factor of $\alt 10^2$ lower than for annihilation directly to monoenergetic gamma rays. The bound on $<σ_A v >_{e^+e^-}$ is thus weaker than that for $<σ_A v >_{γγ}$ by this same factor. The upper bounds on the annihilation cross sections to charged leptons are compared with an upper bound on the {\it total} annihilation cross section defined by neutrinos.

Einstein Field Equation: the Root of All Evil? Quantum Gravity, Solar Application and the Prediction on Gravity Probe B

The starting point of quantum mechanics is the relationship between energy and momentum: energy is proportional to the squared momentum! As a result, energy and momentum have not been treated equally. The wave equation required by quantization is a differential equation which accordingly, does not treat time and space equally. As a result, the Planck constant is not canceled out from the two sides of the equation. Dr. He's gravity is the local bending of background space-time which as suggested by Einstein, can be described by a differential form of second order, and treats time and space equally. Therefore, the Planck constant is completely canceled out in the resulting wave equation. In other words, the quantization of gravity simply does not need the Planck constant!
