Ruppeiner Geometry of Black Hole Thermodynamics

Abstract

The Hessian of the entropy function can be thought of as a metric tensor on state space. In the context of thermodynamical fluctuation theory Ruppeiner has argued that the Riemannian geometry of this metric gives insight into the underlying statistical mechanical system; the claim is supported by numerous examples. We study these geometries for some families of black holes and find that the Ruppeiner geometry is flat for Reissner--Nordström black holes in any dimension, while curvature singularities occur for the Kerr black holes. Kerr black holes have instead flat Weinhold curvature.

Nonlinear tails in the Kerr black hole ringdown

Power law tails induced by nonlinearities of General Relativity (``sourced'' or ``nonlinear'' tails) were recently shown to dominate the late time waveform of Schwarzschild black hole ringdowns. We extend the analytical results regarding such nonlinear tails from Schwarzschild to Kerr black holes by studying the Teukolsky equation. Using a far field approximation to the radial Green's function, we analytically derived the tail power law for spin-weight $s \neq 0$, harmonic mode $(\ell m)$ and source decay $r^{-β}$. Specifically, we found a $t^{-\ell-β-s}$ tail for $β\leq 1$ or $β\geq \ell - s + 2$, and a $t^{-2\ell-3}$ Price tail for $2 \leq β\leq \ell - s + 1$. Our numerical tests were in exact agreement with these analytic results. We also demonstrate the dynamical formation of such nonlinear tails for a massless scalar by numerically solving the Teukolsky equation. In all numerical results, Kerr black hole nonlinear tails have the same power laws as that for Schwarzschild black holes, as expected from the Minkowski nature of the spacetime in the far field region.

Radiative steering of warp shells

We construct exact timelike junctions between compact flat cavities and a Kinnersley photon-rocket exterior. The shells satisfy the strict surface dominant energy condition and steer subluminally under nonnegative radiation. Burns joined at static spheres give $m_f/m_i=e^{-3L}$ for exterior velocity-space path length $L$; the supported cavity center obeys a separate sharp bound. Self-similar shells require anisotropic stress and have growing normal modes with the ambient geometry and coefficients held fixed. A separate elastic model admits local self-gravitating recoil control with outward emission. At zero gravitational coupling, exact unstrained turns yield sharp fuel bounds and travel limits at fixed duration. Limits on angular concentration and inward emission reduce efficiency. For smooth emission and positive inner-face density, stress-free recoil requires photons to enter the cavity. Self-gravitating settling after a turn remains open.

Probing Nonlinear Logarithmic Kalb-Ramond Black Holes: Particle Dynamics, Epicyclic Oscillations and Thermodynamic Signatures

In contrast to conventional linear coupling frameworks, the proposed work investigated the nonlinear effects that become more significant in the strong field regime of a black hole. We have investigated a new class of Kalb Ramond black holes generated by a nonlinear logarithmic coupling of the field, referred to as a Logarithmic Kalb Ramond black hole. The logarithmic coupling introduces strong-field modifications to the spacetime geometry, leading to significant departures from the Schwarzschild and Reissner Nordstrom BHs. We analyze the motion of test particles using the effective potential formalism and derive the conserved energy and angular momentum for circular equatorial geodesics. The stability of circular orbits and the location of the innermost stable circular orbit are examined, revealing a strong dependence on the model parameters Q, l, and $β$. The epicyclic frequencies (radial, vertical, and azimuthal) together with the associated periastron precession demonstrate that nonlinear logarithmic corrections can substantially modify quasi periodic oscillation observables. We further investigate the Hawking temperature and energy emission rate, which show that the nonlinear coupling also impacts distinct imprints on the thermodynamic behavior and evaporation characteristics of the black hole. Our results also identify the BH parameters as key regulators of the orbital dynamics, oscillatory properties, and thermal evolution, providing a unified framework for probing nonlinear KR gravity through strong-field astrophysical phenomena.
