The Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey. VLT/VIMOS Spectroscopy in the GOODS-South Field

Abstract

We present the first results of the VIsible Multiobject Spectrograph (VIMOS) ESO/GOODS program of spectroscopy of faint galaxies in the Chandra Deep Field South (CDF-S). The program complements the FORS2 ESO/GOODS campaign. 3312 spectra have been obtained in service mode with VIMOS at the ESO/VLT UT3. The VIMOS LR-Blue and MR grisms have been used to cover different redshift ranges. Galaxies at 1.8 < z < 3.5 have been observed in the GOODS VIMOS-LR-Blue campaign. Galaxies at z < 1 and Lyman Break Galaxies at z > 3.5 have been observed in the VIMOS MR survey. Here we report results for the first 6 masks (out of 10 total) that have been analyzed from each of the LR-Blue and MR grisms. Spectra of 2344 spectra have been extracted from these 6 LR-Blue masks and 968 from 6 MR masks. 33% of the LR-Blue and 18% of the MR spectra are serendipitous observations. We obtained 1481 redshifts in the LR-Blue campaign and 656 in the MR campaign for a total success rate of 63% and 68%, respectively, which increase to 70% and 75% when only the primary targets are considered. By complementing our VIMOS spectroscopic catalog with all existing spectroscopic redshifts publicly available in the CDF-S, we created a redshift master catalog. By comparing this redshift compilation with different photometric redshift catalogs we estimate the completeness level of the CDF-S spectroscopic coverage in several redshift bins. The completeness level is very high, > 60%, at z < 3.5, and it is very uncertain at higher redshift. The master catalog has been used also to estimate completeness and contamination levels of different galaxy photometric selection techniques, such as the BzK, the so called 'sub'-U-dropout and the drop-out methods and to identify large scale structures in the field.

Bayesian analysis of the backreaction models

We present the Bayesian analysis of four different types of backreation models, which are based on the Buchert equations. In this approach, one considers a solution to the Einstein equations for a general matter distribution and then an average of various observable quantities is taken. Such an approach became of considerable interest when it was shown that it could lead to agreement with observations without resorting to dark energy. In this paper we compare the LambdaCDM model and the backreation models with SNIa, BAO, and CMB data, and find that the former is favoured. However, the tested models were based on some particular assumptions about the relation between the average spatial curvature and the backreaction, as well as the relation between the curvature and curvature index. In this paper we modified the latter assumption, leaving the former unchanged. We find that, by varying the relation between the curvature and curvature index, we can obtain a better fit. Therefore, some further work is still needed -- in particular the relation between the backreaction and the curvature should be revisited in order to fully determine the feasibility of the backreaction models to mimic dark energy.

A differential study of the oxygen abundances in the Galactic thin and thick disks

First results from a study into the abundance trends of oxygen in the Galactic thin and thick disks are presented. Oxygen abundances for 63 nearby F and G dwarf stars, based on very high resolution spectra ($R\sim215 000$) and high signal-to-noise ($S/N>400$) of the faint forbidden oxygen line at 6300 Å, have been determined. Our findings can be summarized as follows: {\bf 1)} at $\rm [Fe/H]<0$ the oxygen trends in the thin and thick disk are smooth and distinct, indicating their different origins, {\bf 2)} $\rm [O/Fe]$ for the thick disk stars show a turn-over at [Fe/H]$\sim -0.35$, indicating the peak of the enrichment from SNe type Ia to the interstellar medium, {\bf 3)} the thin disk stars show a shallow decrease going from $\rm [Fe/H] \sim -0.7$ to the highest metallicities with no apparent turn-over present indicating a more quiet star formation history, and {\bf 4)} $\rm [O/Fe]$ continues to decrease at $\rm [Fe/H]>0$ without showing the leveling out that previously has been seen.

WIMPonium and Boost Factors for Indirect Dark Matter Detection

We argue that WIMP dark matter can annihilate via long-lived "WIMPonium" bound states in reasonable particle physics models of dark matter (DM). WIMPonium bound states can occur at or near threshold leading to substantial enhancements in the DM annihilation rate, closely related to the Sommerfeld effect. Large "boost factor" amplifications in the annihilation rate can thus occur without large density enhancements, possibly preferring colder less dense objects such as dwarf galaxies as locations for indirect DM searches. The radiative capture to and transitions among the WIMPonium states generically lead to a rich energy spectrum of annihilation products, with many distinct lines possible in the case of 2-body decays to $γγ$ or $γZ$ final states. The existence of multiple radiative capture modes further enhances the total annihilation rate, and the detection of the lines would give direct over-determined information on the nature and self-interactions of the DM particles.
