Spaces of closed subgroups of locally compact groups

Abstract

The set $\Cal C(G)$ of closed subgroups of a locally compact group $G$ has a natural topology which makes it a compact space. This topology has been defined in various contexts by Vietoris, Chabauty, Fell, Thurston, Gromov, Grigorchuk, and many others. The purpose of the talk was to describe the space $\Cal C(G)$ first for a few elementary examples, then for $G$ the complex plane, in which case $\Cal C(G)$ is a 4--sphere (a result of Hubbard and Pourezza), and finally for the 3--dimensional Heisenberg group $H$, in which case $\Cal C(H)$ is a 6--dimensional singular space recently investigated by Martin Bridson, Victor Kleptsyn and the author \cite{BrHK}. These are slightly expanded notes prepared for a talk given at several places: the Kortrijk workshop on {\it Discrete Groups and Geometric Structures, with Applications III,} May 26--30, 2008; the {\it Tripode 14,} École Normale Supérieure de Lyon, June 13, 2008; and seminars at the EPFL, Lausanne, and in the Université de Rennes 1. The notes do not contain any other result than those in \cite{BrHK}, and are not intended for publication.

Reversibility and its asymptotic counting in Picard group

We investigate reversible elements in the Picard modular group $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{Z}[i])$. We show that reversibility coincides with strong reversibility for Kleinian groups, in particular for the Picard group. We classify reversible elements in the Picard group and characterize loxodromic reversible elements up to conjugacy. We prove that each such conjugacy class contains exactly eight special representatives. We also obtain asymptotic estimates for the number of reversible conjugacy classes with bounded trace.

Conjugator length in finitely generated groups

We describe all functions $\mathbb{N}\rightarrow \mathbb{N}$ that can be realized, up to the standard equivalence, as conjugator length functions of finitely generated groups. Furthermore, we show that any two increasing functions $f,g\colon \mathbb N\to \mathbb N$ can be simultaneously realized as conjugator length functions of finitely generated, commensurable (in particular, quasi-isometric) groups.

The spectrum of conjugator length functions

A recent program tries to find which functions appear as conjugator length functions. In this note, we show that any (computable) increasing function larger than $n$ appears as $\mathrm{Cl}_G$ for some finitely generated (recursively presented) group. On the other hand, we demonstrate that either $\mathrm{Cl}_G$ must be constant or $\mathrm{Cl}_G(n)\succ n$. Combining these, we obtain a complete description of which functions appear as conjugator length functions of finitely generated groups.
