A classification of Curtis-Tits amalgams

Abstract

A celebrated theorem of Curtis and Tits on groups with finite BN-pair shows that roughly speaking these groups are determined by their local structure. This result was later extended to Kac-Moody groups by P.~Abramenko and B.~Mühlherr. Their theorem states that a Kac-Moody group $G$ is the universal completion of an amalgam of rank two (Levi) subgroups, as they are arranged inside $G$ itself. Taking this result as a starting point, we define a Curtis-Tits structure over a given diagram to be an amalgam of groups such that the sub-amalgam corresponding to a two-vertex sub-diagram is the Curtis-Tits amalgam of some rank-$2$ group of Lie type. There is no a priori reference to an ambient group, nor to the existence of an associated (twin-) building. Indeed, there is no a priori guarantee that the amalgam will not collapse. We then classify these amalgams up to isomorphism. In the present paper we consider triangle-free simply-laced diagrams. Instead of using Goldschmidt's lemma, we introduce a new approach by applying Bass and Serre's theory of graphs of groups. The classification reveals a natural division into two main types: "orientable" and "non-orientable" Curtis-Tits structures. Our classification of orientable Curtis-Tits structures naturally fits with the classification of all locally split Kac-Moody groups using Moufang foundations. In particular, our classification yields a simple criterion for recognizing when Curtis-Tits structures give rise to Kac-Moody groups. The class of non-orientable Curtis-Tits structures is in some sense much larger. Many of these amalgams turn out to have non-trivial interesting completions inviting further study.

Subindices and subfactors of $\mathbb{Z}_n$ and $k$-index stability of finite groups

We study subindices, subfactors, and index stability in the cyclic group $\mathbb{Z}_n$. We prove several theorems that not only confirm a conjecture and resolve some open problems about index stability of such groups, but also provide basic tools for the characterization of finite $k$-index stable groups. As a consequence, we completely characterize all 2-element index stable subsets of $\mathbb{Z}_n$, obtain an exact closed formula for their density, and determine all $n$ for which every 2-subset is index unstable. Finally, we present some problems and a research project extending the study to 3-subsets and general $k$-subsets.

Virtually generating graphs of pro-$p$ groups

We study the virtually generating graph of pro-$p$ groups. We show that various classes of pro-$p$ groups have connected virtually generating graph and we bound its diameter in these cases; e.g.\ compact subgroups of analytic groups over local fields and the Nottingham group.

Surface subgroups of Baumslag doubles along short words

If $U$ is a minimal, diskbusting, finite list of words in a free group $F_n$ of rank $n$ such that the sum of the lengths of words in $U$ is at most $2n+4$, we prove that the natural presentation complex of the Baumslag double of $F_n$ along $U$ virtually contains a $π_1$-injective embedded closed hyperbolic surface. This verifies the Tiling Conjecture of Kim and Wilton for this type of lists of words, and in particular, implies that the corresponding Baumslag double contains a hyperbolic surface subgroup.
