Direct observation of a sharp transition to coherence in Dense Cores

Abstract

We present NH3 observations of the B5 region in Perseus obtained with the Green Bank Telescope (GBT). The map covers a region large enough (~11'x14') that it contains the entire dense core observed in previous dust continuum surveys. The dense gas traced by NH3(1,1) covers a much larger area than the dust continuum features found in bolometer observations. The velocity dispersion in the central region of the core is small, presenting subsonic non-thermal motions which are independent of scale. However, it is thanks to the coverage and high sensitivity of the observations that we present the detection, for the first time, of the transition between the coherent core and the dense but more turbulent gas surrounding it. This transition is sharp, increasing the velocity dispersion by a factor of 2 in less than 0.04 pc (the 31" beam size at the distance of Perseus, ~250 pc). The change in velocity dispersion at the transition is ~3 km/s/pc. The existence of the transition provides a natural definition of dense core: the region with nearly-constant subsonic non-thermal velocity dispersion. From the analysis presented here we can not confirm nor rule out a corresponding sharp density transition.

Observational Evidence for Anisotropic Metal Excess around Galaxies

The exchange of matter and energy between galaxies and their surroundings drives the cosmic baryon cycle, yet mapping metal transport remains an observational challenge. While simulations predict that galactic winds escape anisotropically along minor axes, evidence for chemical enrichment in neighboring galaxies is limited. We analyze 1,433 galaxy pairs from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument survey and detect a gas-phase metallicity excess of 14.6% $\pm$ 3.7% to 24.2% $\pm$ 2.6% in neighbors aligned with the minor axis of massive primary at projected separations of 15--60 kpc, qualitatively consistent with IllustrisTNG simulation. Permutation tests indicate that this excess varies from a marginal detection ($>$92% confidence) at closer separations (15--30 kpc) to a significant signal ($>$98% confidence) at intermediate separations (30--60 kpc). Here, we show that these results provide empirical constraints on galactic feedback models and are consistent with a scenario where anisotropic outflows can enrich nearby galaxies, a mechanism that complements other environmental processes.

A $\wedge$-like metallicity profile in the disk of the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy

Unveiling the properties of the progenitors that formed the tidal structures of the Milky Way (MW) is essential for exploring the MW's assembly history. Such studies further afford a unique opportunity to dissect the formation and evolution of dwarf galaxies by contrasting surviving and disrupted systems. However, reconstructing the intrinsic structure of progenitors solely from the positions and velocities of their tidal debris remains a formidable challenge. Here, we decode the chemo-kinematic signatures embedded in the stellar streams of the Sagittarius (Sgr) dwarf galaxy through N-body simulations. Our simulation reproduces a vertical metallicity gradient in the Sgr streams. We show that this feature is naturally explained if the stream originated from a disk component with a $\wedge$-like metallicity profile. Remarkably, similar metallicity profiles are identified in MaNGA survey data for a few (3/217) field dwarf galaxies, suggesting this feature is rare but not unique to Sgr. The vertical metallicity gradient of stellar streams preserves extra detailed galactic fossil records, enabling quantitative reconstruction of the peculiar structure of the satellite galaxy. The similar metallicity profiles of Sgr and MW raise the question of a possible special coevolution.

oMEGACat. IX. Chemical Tagging of Omega Centauri Populations with Machine-Learning-Inferred Abundances from the MUSE Spectrograph

We present chemical abundance measurements for 7,302 red giant branch stars within the half-light radius (~5') of $ω$ Centauri ($ω$ Cen), derived from MUSE spectra using the neural network model DD-Payne. DD-Payne effectively identifies spectral features of C, N, and O for [Fe/H]>-1.0 dex; Mg for [Fe/H]>-1.5 dex; and Na, Ca, and Ba for all metallicities. By combining these measurements with previous high-resolution studies, we create the most comprehensive picture of $ω$ Cen's rich chemical evolutionary history. For the first time, we map elemental variations across the entire chromosome diagram, which is widely used to identify multiple populations. We analyze the median chemical abundance trends as functions of age and metallicity for different subpopulations. The DD-Payne measurements of [C/Fe], [N/Fe], and [O/Fe] extend literature trends to higher metallicities and show continuous abundance-metallicity relations, with [(C+N+O)/Fe] increasing steadily with [Fe/H]. [Ca/Fe] and the s-process element [Ba/Fe] also increase with metallicity across all populations. For [Ba/Fe], the chemically enhanced (P2) populations are more enriched than primordial (P1) and the intermediate (Im) populations. Furthermore, [N/Fe] correlates strongly with stellar age while [Ca/Fe] and [Ba/Fe] exhibit a weaker age dependence. Using these abundance-metallicity-age relations, we evaluate formation scenarios of $ω$ Cen proposed in the literature and find none fully explains all the observed relations. Our study demonstrates that combining MUSE with machine learning enables large-sample stellar abundance measurements in crowded cluster cores, overcoming the limitations of fiber-fed spectroscopy for studying multiple stellar populations and their evolutionary histories.
