Equilibrium singularity distributions in the plane

Abstract

We characterize all fixed equilibrium point singularity distributions in the plane of logarithmic type, allowing for real, imaginary, or complex singularity strengths Γ. The dynamical system follows from the assumption that each of the N singularities moves according to the flowfield generated by all the others at that point. For strength vector Γ from R^N, the dynamical system is the classical point vortex system obtained from a singular discrete representation of the vorticity field from incompressible fluid flow. When Γ is purely imaginary, it corresponds to a system of sources and sinks, whereas when Γ from C^N the system consists of spiral sources and sinks discussed in Kochin et. al. (1964). We formulate the equilibrium problem as one in linear algebra, AΓ= 0, where A is a NxN complex skew-symmetric configuration matrix which encodes the geometry of the system of interacting singularities. For an equilibrium to exist, A must have a kernel. Γ must then be an element of the nullspace of A. We prove that when N is odd, A always has a kernel, hence there is a choice of Γ for which the system is a fixed equilibrium. When N is even, there may or may not be a non-trivial nullspace of A, depending on the relative position of the points in the plane. We describe a method for classifying the equilibria in terms of the distribution of the non-zero eigenvalues (singular values) of A, or equivalently, the non-zero eigenvalues of the associated covariance matrix A'A, from which one can calculate the Shannon entropy of the configuration.

Effective equidistribution of orbits under semisimple groups on congruence quotients

We prove an effective equidistribution result for periodic orbits of semisimple groups on congruence quotients of an ambient semisimple group. This extends a previous work of Einsiedler, Margulis and Venkatesh. The main new feature is that we allow for periodic orbits of semisimple groups with nontrivial centralizer in the ambient group. Our proof uses crucially an effective closing lemma from work of the author with Lindenstrauss, Margulis,Mohammadi, and Shah.

Generalized entropy of measure-induced maps

A classical result by E. Glasner and B. Weiss states that the topological entropy of a map $f$ is zero if and only if the topological entropy of its measure-induced map $f_*$ is zero, where $f_*$ is defined as the push-forward of a measure. In this work, we use generalized entropy to distinguish the complexity of these maps and prove that the measure-induced map is much more complex than the original map. Moreover, we introduce the generalized mean dimension, an invariant that is useful for distinguishing dynamical systems with zero mean dimension, including those with the small-boundary property, and we show a relationship between this new invariant and generalized entropy.

The endpoint problem for $\varepsilon$-hypercyclicity

For a fixed $0<\varepsilon<1$, F. Bayart asked in 2024 whether there exists an operator $T$ such that, for every $0<δ<1$, $T$ is $δ$-hypercyclic if and only if $δ\in[\varepsilon,1)$. We answer this question affirmatively by constructing a weighted backward shift on $\ell_2(\mathbb N_0,\ell_2(\mathbb N_0))$ with this property.
