On the computation of the Picard group for $K3$ surfaces

Abstract

We construct examples of $K3$ surfaces of geometric Picard rank $1$. Our method is a refinement of that of R. van Luijk. It is based on an analysis of the Galois module structure on étale cohomology. This allows to abandon the original limitation to cases of Picard rank $2$ after reduction modulo $p$. Furthermore, the use of Galois data enables us to construct examples which require significantly less computation time.

Cartier Duals of Two-Dimensional Kummer--Artin--Schreier--Witt Type Kernels

We study Cartier duality for the kernel of a two-dimensional Kummer--Artin--Schreier--Witt type homomorphism over a $\mathbb{Z}_{(p)}$-algebra. For the $l$-th such homomorphism between extensions of deformations of the additive group, we give, under a natural nilpotency condition, an explicit description of the Cartier dual of its kernel in terms of Witt vectors. More precisely, the Cartier dual is identified with the kernel of a homomorphism between quotient fppf sheaves of two-dimensional Witt vectors determined by the operators naturally associated with the Kummer--Artin--Schreier--Witt type homomorphism. The proof combines the Sekiguchi--Suwa descriptions of characters and Hochschild extensions in terms of deformed Artin--Hasse exponentials with an analysis of the formal completion and its behavior with respect to the fppf topology.

A Resolution of the Diagonal for Smooth Projective Toric Varieties

The cellular construction of Bayer-Popescu-Sturmfels extends Beilinson's diagonal resolution from projective space to projective toric varieties whose lattice of principal divisors is unimodular. We investigate the smooth projective case in which this lattice condition fails. The periodic arrangement then contains vertices outside the lattice, and the associated finite cellular complex can acquire homology in degree $0$ and in higher degrees. We use a floor-function labeling to assign Laurent monomials to vertices in a way compatible with the periodic hyperplane arrangement. A counterexample shows that, without further hypotheses, the undeformed complex need not resolve the diagonal. We therefore impose a symmetry hypothesis on the fan (central symmetry across the origin) under which the construction yields a locally free resolution of $\mathcal{O}_Δ$ on $X_Σ\times X_Σ$. We also discuss how a deformation parameter $ε$ should lead to a broader family of resolutions.

Exceptional Collections of Line Bundles for Smooth Toric Fano Surfaces and Threefolds

The cellular resolution of the diagonal given by Bayer-Popescu-Sturmfels for unimodular projective toric varieties yields a full, strong exceptional collection of line bundles on unimodular projective toric surfaces. The Hanlon-Hicks-Lazarev resolution of the diagonal yields a full, strong exceptional collection of line bundles for 16 of the 18 smooth toric Fano threefolds.
