Discovery of interstellar mercapto radicals (SH) with the GREAT instrument on SOFIA

Abstract

We report the first detection of interstellar mercapto radicals, obtained along the sight-line to the submillimeter continuum source W49N. We have used the GREAT instrument on SOFIA to observe the 1383 GHz Doublet Pi 3/2 J = 5/2 - 3/2 lambda doublet in the upper sideband of the L1 receiver. The resultant spectrum reveals SH absorption in material local to W49N, as well as in foreground gas, unassociated with W49N, that is located along the sight-line. For the foreground material at velocities in the range 37 - 44 km/s with respect to the local standard of rest, we infer a total SH column density ~ 2.6 E+12 cm-2, corresponding to an abundance of ~ 7 E-9 relative to H2, and yielding an SH/H2S abundance ratio ~ 0.13. The observed SH/H2S abundance ratio is much smaller than that predicted by standard models for the production of SH and H2S in turbulent dissipation regions and shocks, and suggests that the endothermic neutral-neutral reaction SH + H2 -> H2S + H must be enhanced along with the ion-neutral reactions believed to produce CH+ and SH+ in diffuse molecular clouds.

Tracing the Cosmic Evolution of the Cool Circumgalactic Medium of Luminous Red Galaxies with DESI Year 1 Data

We investigate the properties of the cool circumgalactic medium (CGM) of massive galaxies and their cosmic evolution. By using the year 1 dataset of luminous red galaxies (LRGs) and QSOs from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument survey, we construct a sample of approximately 800,000 galaxy-quasar pairs and measure the radial distribution and kinematics of the cool gas traced by Mg II absorption lines as a function of galaxy properties from redshift 0.4 to redshift 1.2. Our results show that the covering fraction of the cool gas around LRGs increases with redshift, following a trend similar to the global evolution of galaxy star formation rate. At small radii (< 0.3rvir), the covering fraction anti-correlates with stellar mass, suggesting that mass-dependent processes suppress the cool gas content in the inner region. In addition, we measure the gas dispersion by modeling the velocity distribution of absorbers with a narrow and a broad components -- sigma_n ~ 160 and sigma_b ~ 380 km/s -- and quantify their relative contributions. The results show that the broad component becomes more prominent in the outer region, and its relative importance in the central region grows with increasing stellar mass. Finally, we discuss possible origins of the cool gas around massive galaxies, including the contribution of satellite galaxies and the precipitation scenario.

Modeling Globular Cluster Stellar Streams with a Basis-Expansion N-body Code

Globular cluster stellar streams probe galaxy-formation processes and can potentially reveal the distribution of dark matter in galaxies. In many theoretical studies, streams are modeled with particle-spray or direct N-body codes. But particle-spray methods abstract away the internal dynamics of the progenitor by making strong assumptions about the escape physics, while direct N-body is prohibitively expensive for realistic (N>10^5) systems. In this paper, we present the stream-modeling capabilities of KRIOS, a new basis-expansion N-body code for collisional stellar dynamics, that bridges this runtime vs. accuracy gap. We show that KRIOS reproduces NBODY6++GPU cluster models, and their associated streams, more accurately than particle spray in a fraction of the NBODY6++GPU wall-clock time. We then compare KRIOS to various particle-spray methods on 10 orbits similar to known Milky Way streams. The morphology and kinematics of these streams most disagree when the progenitor is tightly bound to the host, as these systems are often subject to stronger tidal forces. Finally, we discuss which elements of the progenitor physics are most important for modeling stellar streams and how these might be incorporated into particle-spray methods.

Nitrogen-Loud Quasars from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument. II. Broad-Line Region Metallicity and Relative Nitrogen Enrichment

Whether the unusually strong nitrogen emission in nitrogen-loud (N-loud) quasars reflects high overall metallicity, enhanced nitrogen abundance relative to other elements, or both has long been debated. We analyze the broad-line region (BLR) abundances of 121 N-loud quasars at $2.13 \leq z \leq 3.90$ selected from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument Data Release 1 and construct a control sample of normal quasars matched in redshift, continuum luminosity, and virial black hole mass. Within the N-loud sample, metallicities inferred from N V/C IV span $\sim 3$-$50\,Z_\odot$ and are systematically higher than those inferred from the nitrogen-independent (Si IV+O IV])/C IV and Al III/C IV diagnostics, which agree closely and mainly span $\sim 1$-$20\,Z_\odot$. Compared with the matched controls, the N-loud quasars show systematically higher metallicities in both N V/C IV and (Si IV+O IV])/C IV, with median values approximately three times those of the controls. Notably, the discrepancy between the metallicities inferred from N V/C IV and (Si IV+O IV])/C IV becomes more pronounced toward the high-metallicity end of the N-loud sample, suggesting additional nitrogen enrichment beyond the overall metal enrichment. Together, these results indicate that N-loud quasars have both high overall BLR metallicity and enhanced relative nitrogen abundance, suggesting that relative nitrogen abundance is at least partially decoupled from overall metallicity. N-loud quasars therefore provide a high-metallicity laboratory for understanding how nuclear environments can produce unusual abundance patterns and offer a complementary view of how nitrogen enrichment arises across cosmic time.
