Heat kernel generated frames in the setting of Dirichlet spaces

Abstract

Wavelet bases and frames consisting of band limited functions of nearly exponential localization on Rd are a powerful tool in harmonic analysis by making various spaces of functions and distributions more accessible for study and utilization, and providing sparse representation of natural function spaces (e.g. Besov spaces) on Rd. Such frames are also available on the sphere and in more general homogeneous spaces, on the interval and ball. The purpose of this article is to develop band limited well-localized frames in the general setting of Dirichlet spaces with doubling measure and a local scale-invariant Poincaré inequality which lead to heat kernels with small time Gaussian bounds and Hölder continuity. As an application of this construction, band limited frames are developed in the context of Lie groups or homogeneous spaces with polynomial volume growth, complete Riemannian manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded from below and satisfying the volume doubling property, and other settings. The new frames are used for decomposition of Besov spaces in this general setting.

Reflexive and strictly convex Banach spaces without Property (H)

We prove that Property $(H)$ fails for a broad class of reflexive strictly convex Banach spaces. More generally, the real Banach space \[ \Big(\bigoplus_{j=1}^{\infty} L^{p_j}(Ω_j,μ_j)\Big)_{\ell^s} \] does not have Property $(H)$ whenever $1\le s<\infty$, $1\le p_j<\infty$, $\sup_j p_j=+\infty$, and each $L^{p_j}(Ω_j,μ_j)$ is infinite-dimensional.

Bounds on the Minimum Eigenvalue Modulus for Hadamard Products of $\mathbf{M}$- and $\mathbf{H}$-Matrices and Their Inverses

The quantity $q(A\circ A^{-1})$, the minimum modulus of the eigenvalues of $A\circ A^{-1}$, arises naturally in connection with positive diagonal symmetrizability. For an invertible $\mathbf{M}$-matrix $A$ of order $n$, the classical bounds $\frac{2}{n}\leq q(A\circ A^{-1})\leq 1$ are known. We discuss the sharpness of the lower bound $\frac{2}{n}$ and investigate the converse of a related result involving the Jacobi iteration matrix. In particular, we show that $ρ(J_{A_k})\to 1$ does not, in general, imply $q(A_k\circ A_k^{-1})\to \frac{2}{n}$, and identify a class for which this implication holds. We then turn to invertible $\mathbf{H}$-matrices, a broader class that contains invertible $\mathbf{M}$-matrices. We show that $A\circ A^{-1}$ is an invertible $\mathbf{H}$-matrix whenever $A$ is an invertible $\mathbf{H}$-matrix. In contrast to the $\mathbf{M}$-matrix setting, $q(A\circ A^{-1})$ can be arbitrarily close to zero. However, replacing $A^{-1}$ by the inverse of the comparison matrix restores the classical lower bound: we prove that $q(A\circ\mathcal{M}(A)^{-1})\geq \frac{2}{n}$ and obtain further bounds involving the Jacobi iteration matrix of $\mathcal{M}(A)$. Finally, for positive diagonally symmetrizable invertible $\mathbf{H}$-matrices, we establish the upper bound $q(A\circ A^{-1})\leq1$ and, in the irreducible case, characterize when equality occurs.

Bessel Potential Spaces and Complex Interpolation: Continuous embeddings

Bessel potential spaces, introduced in the 1960s, are derived through complex interpolation between Lebesgue and Sobolev spaces, making them intermediate spaces of fractional differentiability order. Bessel potential spaces have recently gained attention due to their identification with the Riesz fractional gradient. This paper explores Bessel potential spaces as complex interpolation spaces, providing original proofs of fundamental properties based on abstract interpolation theory. Main results include a direct proof of norm equivalence, continuous embeddings, and the relationship with Gagliardo spaces.
