Relativistic forces in Lagangian mechanics

Abstract

We give a general definition of \emph{relativistic force} in the context of Lagrangian mechanics. Once this is done we prove that the only relativistic forces which are linear on the velocities are those coming from differential 2-forms defined on the configuration space. In this sense, electromagnetic fields provide a mechanical system with the simplest type of relativistic forces.

Hard to soft edge transition for the Muttalib-Borodin ensembles with integer parameter $θ$

We find the universal limiting correlation kernels of the Muttalib-Borodin (MB) ensembles with integer parameter $θ\geq 2$ at $0$ in the transitive regime between the hard edge regime and the soft edge regime. This generalizes the previously studied hard edge to soft edge transition in unitarily invariant random matrix theory by Its, Kuijlaars and Östensson, which is the $θ= 1$ special case of our MB ensemble. The derivation is based on the vector Riemann-Hilbert (RH) problems for the biorthogonal polynomials associated with the MB ensemble. In the analysis of the RH problems, we construct matrix-valued model RH problems of size $(θ+ 1) \times (θ+ 1)$, and prove the solvability of the model RH problems by a vanishing lemma. The new limiting correlation kernels are proved to be universal for a large class of potential functions, and they interpolate the Meijer G-kernels for the hard edge regime and the Airy kernel for the soft edge regime. We observe that the new limiting correlation kernels have the integrability that is not seen in previous studies in random matrix theory and determinantal point processes. In the $θ= 2$ case, we give a detailed analysis of the Lax pair associated with the model RH problem, show that it results in the Chazy I equation, which has a Painlevé IV reduction, and find that the Lax pair is in the Drinfeld-Sokolov hierarchies.

Reconstruction methods for inverse scattering problems with phaseless data

We investigate phaseless inverse scattering problem for the Schrödinger equation and develop reconstruction methods based on the inverse Born series (IBS). We consider three types of phaseless data: the far-field total field, the total field and the far-field scattered field. For phaseless total-field data, we extend the IBS framework and analyze its radius of convergence. In the far-field setting, we propose a Fourier-based reconstruction method that exploits the scattering reciprocity between incident and observation directions to recover Fourier coefficients of the scattering potential. For phaseless scattered-field data, we employ a polarization-based approach to recover phase information and enable IBS reconstruction. Numerical experiments are conducted to validate the proposed methods.

On the Dirichlet-to-Neumann conformal invariant of bounded planar domains

Using an analogue of the Mandelstam-Giddings-Wolpert diagrams, we introduce a new canonical representative of the conformal class of a bounded domain of arbitrary connectivity in $\mathbb{C}$ as a flat conical surface with geodesic boundary (a "truncated light-cone diagram", simply LC-diagram in the sequel). The space of diagrams carries natural coordinates. We derive variational formulas for the determinant of the Dirichlet Laplacian on a LC-diagram with respect to these coordinates. Then, passing to the Schottky double of the LC-diagram, making use of the Burghelea-Friedlander-Kappeler formula and the known variational formulas for determinants of Laplacians on the moduli space of holomorphic differentials, we compute the Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DN) conformal invariant $\frac{{\rm det}'Λ}{|Γ|}$ (here $Λ$ is the DN operator on the boundary, $Γ$, of a multiply connected domain and $|Γ|$ is the length of the boundary). The resulting formula (which uses the periods of the Schottky double of the domain only) provides an elementary counterpart to the formulas of Guillarmou and Guillopé who had expressed the DN invariant through the Ruelle and Selberg zeta-functions. Our formula agrees with the recent result of Wentworth on the asymptotics of the DN invariant as all but one boundary components shrink; we have used this result to fix the undetermined constant of integration in our formula. As a corollary, we derive an explicit formula for the determinant of the Dirichlet Laplacian in a multiply connected domain.
