Some remarks on universality properties of $\ell_\infty / c_0$

Abstract

We prove that if continuum is not a Kunen cardinal, then there is a uniform Eberlein compact space $K$ such that the Banach space $C(K)$ does not embed isometrically into $\ell_\infty/c_0$. We prove a similar result for isomorphic embeddings. We also construct a consistent example of a uniform Eberlein compactum whose space of continuous functions embeds isomorphically into $\ell_\infty/c_0$, but fails to embed isometrically. As far as we know it is the first example of this kind.

Sharp Operator Khintchine inequality and $Z_2$ Property

We study the $p=1$ operator Khintchine inequality associated with orthonormal systems and establish two quantitative implications relating its optimal constant $A_1$ to the $Z_2$ property. For an orthonormal system $W$ with finite $Z_2(W)$, we prove $A_1(W)\leq\sqrt{1+Z_2(W)}$. Conversely, there exists an absolute constant $δ>0$ such that, for canonical group unitaries indexed by any subset $V$ of a discrete group, $A_1(V)<\sqrt2+δ$ implies $Z_2(V)\leq2$. The converse is detected by $2\times2$ matrix coefficients supported on at most six group elements. For the classical Rademacher sequence, we determine the sharp operator Khintchine constant $A_1=\sqrt2$, answering the question left open by Haagerup and Musat~\cite{Haagerup2007}. Since this sequence has $Z_2=2$, the conclusion $Z_2(V)\leq2$ is optimal.

Norming Approximate Orthogonality in Normed Linear Spaces

We introduce and study the notion of \emph{norming approximate orthogonality}, a two-parameter generalization of Birkhoff--James orthogonality in normed linear spaces. For $δ, \varepsilon \in [0,1)$ with $\varepsilon < (1-δ)^2$, we say $x \nperp y$ in $X$ if there exists $f \in X^*$ with $|f(x)| \geq (1-δ)\|f\|\|x\|$ and $|f(y)| \leq \frac{\varepsilon}{1-δ}\|f\|\|y\|$, simultaneously relaxing both the norming condition on $x$ and the vanishing condition on $y$. It is proved that \[ x\nperp y \iff \|x+λy\|\geq (1-δ)\|x\|-\frac{\varepsilon}{1-δ}\|λy\|~\qquad \forall ~\text{scalars}~λ. \] This framework interpolates between two notions of approximate orthogonality in normed linear spaces due to Chmieliński and Dragomir, and recovers three existing notions of orthogonality in extreme cases: exact Birkhoff--James orthogonality at $δ= \varepsilon = 0$, the approximate orthogonality of Chmieliński at $δ= 0$, and the approximate orthogonality of Dragomir at $\varepsilon = 0$. A two-parameter proximity result generalizing Chmlieński's characterization of $\perp_B^\varepsilon$ is established. The forward and converse implications are governed by the distinct thresholds $\frac{\varepsilon}{(1-δ)^2}$ and $\frac{\varepsilon}{1-δ}$, which collapse to $\varepsilon$ of Chmieliński precisely when $δ=0$, and the strictness of this gap is confirmed by counterexamples in $\ell_\infty^2$. A dual formulation of norming approximate orthogonality is established with a complete equivalence in the reflexive case. We apply our results to (vector-valued) continuous function spaces, which extends some earlier results and recovers few operator theoretical results with alternative proofs using measure theoretic techniques.

Typical dynamical properties of operators on $\ell_p$

We investigate the typical dynamical properties of hypercyclic operators in $\mathcal{L}_M(X)$, the set of all bounded linear operators on $X$ whose norms are at most $M$, when $X=\ell_p$, $1< p<\infty$. We show that, with respect to SOT$^*$, a typical operator $T\in \mathcal{L}_M(X)$ is weakly mixing, is weakly disjoint from a given hypercyclic operator $S$, is not topologically ergodic, and satisfies $(T,T^2,\dotsc,T^k)$ is disjoint hypercyclic for any $k\geq 2$. We also show that the similar typical dynamical properties for the concrete family $\mathcal{M}=\{I+B_w\in \mathcal{L}(X)\colon w\in c_0(\mathbb{Z})\}$, endowed with the norm topology, where $B_w$ is a bilateral weighted backward shift.
