Microwave-controlled coupling of Majorana bound states

Abstract

We propose microwave-controlled rotations for qubits realized as Majorana bound states. To this end we study an inhomogeneous Kitaev chain in a microwave cavity. The chain consists of two topologically nontrivial regions separated by a topologically trivial, gapped region. The Majorana bound states at the interfaces between the left (right) regions and the central region are coupled, and their energies are split by virtual cotunneling processes. The amplitude for these cotunneling processes decreases exponentially in the number of sites of the gapped region, and the decay length diverges as the gap of the topologically trivial region closes. We demonstrate that microwave radiation can exponentially enhance the coupling between the Majorana bound states, both for classical and quantized electric fields. By solving the appropriate Liouville equation numerically we show that microwaves can drive Rabi oscillations in the Majorana sector. Our model emerges as an effective description for a topological semiconductor nanowire in a microwave cavity. Thus, our proposal provides an experimentally feasible way to obtain full single-qubit control necessary for universal quantum computation with Majorana qubits.

Space Group Symmetry of Chiral Fe-deficient van der Waals Magnet $\text{Fe}_{\text{3-x}}\text{GeTe}_{\text{2}}$ Probed by Convergent Beam Electron Diffraction

The crystal symmetry of Fe-deficient $\text{Fe}_{\text{3-x}}\text{GeTe}_{\text{2}}$ at room temperature has been investigated by a combination of selected-area electron diffraction (SAED) and convergent-beam electron diffraction (CBED). By symmetry analysis of CBED patterns along different zone axis, the space group of $\text{Fe}_{\text{3-x}}\text{GeTe}_{\text{2}}$ at room-temperature has been identified as $P6_3mc$ (No.186), which derives from the high-symmetry parent system $\text{Fe}_{\text{3}}\text{GeTe}_{\text{2}}$ ($P6_3/mmc$) by breaking the mirror symmetry along the 6-fold rotation axis. The $P3m1$ (No.156) space group previously reported for $\text{Fe}_{\text{3-x}}\text{GeTe}_{\text{2}}$ is a subgroup of $P6_3mc$ suggesting further possible symmetry breaks in this non-stoichiometric system.

Valley Hall viscosity in the integer quantum Hall phases of (2+1)D Dirac materials

We calculate the valley-resolved Hall viscosity for Lorentz-invariant integer quantum Hall phases in Semenoff-semiconducting graphene-like systems at zero temperature. The Kubo formalism based discussion reported in Phys. Rev. B 100, 115421 (2019) revealed the divergence of single valley viscous Hall contributions for this case with only a valley-summed Hall viscosity being finite and therefore well-defined. Our approach to the Hall viscosity calculation is based on an equivalent Green function formulation within Wigner-Weyl calculus. We find that the previously identified divergence may be regularized in a way compatible with both valley-summed Hall viscosity and (non)local Hall conductivity. Together with the local Hall conductivity and its first nonlocal correction, reported as well in Phys. Rev. B 100, 115421 (2019), we extend the empirical relativistic Hoyos-Son formula to individual valleys. Both the original Hoyos-Son formula for Galilean invariant fluids and its relativistic extension to Dirac materials are found to be structurally identical for integer quantum Hall phases and expressible in terms of local electric and viscous Hall responses. In addition we evaluate the valley(-difference) Hall viscosity for biased Bernal bilayer graphene in the chiral fermion low energy approximation using the same regularization prescription. Prospects of measuring valley Hall viscosity in nonlocal transport for mono- and bilayer graphene- and group-VI TMD-based devices are discussed.

Aharonov-Casher-induced electric quadrupole of charge-neutral particles

For charged particles, their orbital angular momentum (OAM) in solid have a direct magnetic manifestation as an orbital magnetization. For charge-neutral particles, however, the physical manifestation of the OAM in solid remains unclear. Here, we show that a charge-neutral particle carrying a magnetic moment couples to electric-field gradient through the Aharonov-Casher (AC) effect, thereby exhibiting the electric quadrupole in crystalline solids. This AC-induced electric quadrupole (AC-EQ) contains the scalar, toroidal dipole, and reduced quadrupole components, which are conjugate to the divergence, circulation, and shear of the electric field, respectively. As representative examples, we calculate the AC-EQ of magnons in two magnetic systems. In ferromagnetic pyrochlore, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) induces a sizable AC-EQ, whereas in helical Fe langasite the AC-EQ emerges from the helical spin configuration even in the absence of DMI.
