On metric characterizations of the Radon-Nikodým and related properties of Banach spaces

Abstract

We find a class of metric structures which do not admit bilipschitz embeddings into Banach spaces with the Radon-Nikodým property. Our proof relies on Chatterji's (1968) martingale characterization of the RNP and does not use the Cheeger's (1999) metric differentiation theory. The class includes the infinite diamond and both Laakso (2000) spaces. We also show that for each of these structures there is a non-RNP Banach space which does not admit its bilipschitz embedding. We prove that a dual Banach space does not have the RNP if and only if it admits a bilipschitz embedding of the infinite diamond. The paper also contains related characterizations of reflexivity and the infinite tree property.

A Constructive Framework for Generalized Fourier Transforms via Truncate-and-Generalized Limits

This paper introduces a constructive definition of generalized Fourier transforms based entirely on ordinary truncated Fourier integrals and ordered dual-domain limits, within the framework of improper Riemann integration and classical analysis. The proposed truncate-and-generalized-limit (t.g.l.) formulation does not require test-function spaces, Lebesgue measure theory, or duality pairings in its proofs: the forward and inverse transforms are defined directly through finite-domain truncation of the target function, followed by successive ordered limits in the time and frequency domains. As consequences of this constructive definition, the formulation provides a unified treatment of non-decaying, oscillatory, and locally singular functions beyond the classical L1(R) setting; reveals an inherent asymmetry between the forward transform, interpreted as a first-order generalized-limit family, and the inverse transform, which requires frequency-domain truncation to generate pointwise reconstruction through Dirichlet-type oscillatory localisation; and clarifies the distinction between the t.g.l. approach and distribution theory, where generalized Fourier transforms are introduced through duality pairings rather than constructed from ordinary integrals. The inversion formula is established rigorously for two concrete admissible classes using only the classical Dirichlet convergence theorem. Several examples confirm that the framework covers constants, polynomials, periodic functions, singular kernels, and chirp signals within a single constructive scheme.

Compactness of Toeplitz Operators on the Bergman Space

Let $φ\in L^\infty(\D)$. We study compactness criteria for \(T_φ\) on the Bergman space $A^2(\D)$. Axler and Zheng~\cite{AZ1998} established a necessary and sufficient condition for compactness in terms of the Berezin transform. For a general bounded measurable function $φ$, however, its Berezin transform $\tildeφ$ does not readily reveal the intrinsic properties of $φ$. Motivated by a characterization in terms of the symbol itself, Zhu~\cite{ZhuSlides} proposed a conjecture on compact Toeplitz operators. In this paper, we characterize compactness of $T_φ$ on the unweighted Bergman space in terms of local averages of the symbol. We prove that compactness is equivalent to the vanishing of averages over Bergman disks of any prescribed fixed radius. We also establish an equivalent criterion in terms of Carleson box averages that tend to zero uniformly in the angular variable. Finally, we construct a nonnegative bounded symbol whose Carleson box averages tend to zero at every fixed angle, although the associated Toeplitz operator is not compact.

SOT-large subspaces of non-cyclic operators

In this paper, we consider the strong operator topology (SOT) on the space $\mathcal{L} (X)$ of continuous linear operators on an infinite-dimensional Fréchet space $X$. The existence of SOT-dense subspaces as well as of SOT-closed infinite-dimensional subspaces inside the family of all non-cyclic operators is established. Other classes of operators, such as non-dense range or non-injective operators, are also studied in this regard. Moreover, we prove for the sequence space $\ell_p$ $(0 < p < \infty)$ that the family of all non-cyclic members of $\mathcal{L}(\ell_p)$ contains an isometric copy of $\ell_p$.
