Disentangling flow and nonflow correlations via Bayesian unfolding of the event-by-event distributions of harmonic coefficients in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions

Abstract

The performance of the Bayesian unfolding method in extracting the event-by-event (EbyE) distributions of harmonic flow coefficients v_n is investigated using a toy model simulation, as well as simulations based on the HIJING and AMPT models. The unfolding method is shown to recover the input v_2-v_4 distributions for multiplicities similar to those observed in Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC. The effects of the nonflow are evaluated using HIJING simulation with and without a flow afterburner. The probability distribution of v_n resulting only from nonflow in HIJING is nearly a Gaussian and can be largely suppressed in the data-driven unfolding method used by the ATLAS Collaboration. The residual nonflow effects have no appreciable impact on the v_3 distributions, but are found to affect the tails of the v_2 and v_4 distributions; these effects manifest as a small simultaneous change in the mean and standard deviation of the $v_n$ distributions. For the AMPT model, which contains both flow fluctuations and nonflow effects, the reduced shape of the extracted v_n distributions is found to be independent of pT in the low pT region, similar to what is observed in the ATLAS data. The prospect of using the EbyE distribution of the harmonic spectrum aided by the unfolding technique as a general tool to study azimuthal correlations in high energy collisions is also discussed.

Thick-target Yield of $^{65}$Cu($α,n)^{68}$Ga Near Threshold and Implications for Nuclear Medicine, Deep Underground Detector Backgrounds, and Nucleosynthesis

We report thick target yields of $^{65}{\rm Cu}(α,n)^{68}{\rm Ga}$ from $α$ energies $E_α$$=$6.5--8~MeV measured via neutron-counting at the Edwards Accelerator Laboratory at Ohio University. Our results agree with prior results based on single-foil irradiations, while disagreeing with thick-target yields inferred from stacked-foil irradiations by up to an order of magnitude. Based on comparisons of our and prior measurements to Hauser-Feshbach calculations, we estimate the thick-target yield for $^{68}{\rm Ga}$ from $E_α$=14~MeV impinging on 100\%-enriched copper ($^{65}{\rm Cu}$) is 161$^{+5}_{-24}$~MBq/$μ$Ah (for He$^{++}$), which is in agreement with the current IAEA estimate of 156~MBq/$μ$Ah. At $E_α$$=$8~MeV, where radioimpurity-free production of $^{68}{\rm Ga}$ could be realized with a natural copper target, our yield estimate is nearly 4$\times$ lower than the IAEA estimate. We find that the $^{65}{\rm Cu}(α,n)$ cross section estimates presently employed for neutrino and dark matter detector backgrounds and the $^{65}{\rm Cu}(α,n)$ astrophysical reaction rate recently recommended for nucleosynthesis calculations are in agreement with our measurement results.

Modernization in processing and dissemination of experimental cross section data in EXFOR

The EXFOR library is a nearly complete database for experimental radionuclide production cross sections for light charged-particle induced reactions, and retrieval of the experimental cross sections in EXFOR is the first step in determination of the best estimate of the radionuclide production cross section. The EXFOR format was designed with 80-column punched cards as the recording media, but the format is still preferred for compilation and exchange of the nuclear reaction data. The format is suitable for reading and processing by EXFOR compilers, but it is not a good choice for reading by EXFOR users with modern computer languages such as Python. We have recently attempted to lower the barrier for modern software engineers to access the information stored in the EXFOR by developing tools converting an EXFOR file to (1) the HTML format for human reading (X4IVEW), and (2) the CX4 (Compact EXFOR) format for tabulation and plotting (X4TOCX). This article introduces X4VIEW and a preliminary version of X4TOCX with the radionuclide production cross section as an example.

Probing jet quenching via the correlation of groomed jet substructure observables in Pb$-$Pb and pp collisions

A measurement of the correlation between the splitting angle $θ_{\rm g}$ and the momentum-sharing fraction $z_{\rm g}$ of the first hard splitting in a parton shower in pp collisions and 0$-$10% central Pb$-$Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 5 TeV with the ALICE detector is reported. Charged-particle jets are reconstructed using the anti-$k_{\rm T}$ algorithm with a jet resolution parameter $R$ = 0.2, in the transverse-momentum range $60 \leq p_{\rm T,ch\;jet} < 80$ GeV/$c$. The Soft Drop grooming algorithm is used to identify the first splitting in the parton shower. Jets observed in Pb$-$Pb collisions are narrower than in pp collisions. This effect is more pronounced for balanced than for unbalanced jets. No significant modification of the momentum-sharing fraction is observed for jets with small opening angles. In contrast, there is a hint that jets with a large opening angle may be less balanced in transverse momentum in Pb$-$Pb collisions compared to pp collisions. The correlations between $θ_{\rm g}$ and $z_{\rm g}$ are well described in pp collisions by PYTHIA 8 and POWHEG while HERWIG shows too few jets with large opening angle. In Pb$-$Pb collisions the measurement is compared to a variety of models. The measurement is insensitive to the different implementations of medium response. Inclusion of elastic scatterings, as implemented in the HYBRID model is preferred to describe the unbalanced jets with large $θ_{\rm g}$ in Pb$-$Pb collisions. The balanced jets, however, are less sensitive to elastic scatterings.
