Centrality and Transverse Momentum Dependencies of Minijets and Hadrons in Au-Au Collisions

Abstract

In the study of hadron production in Au-Au collisions at RHIC minijets play an important role in generating shower partons in the intermediate \ppt\ region. Momentum degradation of the hard and semihard partons as they traverse the inhomogeneous medium at various azimuthal angles results in a complicated convolution of geometrical, nuclear and dynamical factors that cannot usually be described in a transparent way. In this work a compact formula is found that represents the inclusive distributions of minijets of any parton type at the surface of the medium for any collision centrality. They take into account the contributions from all initiating partons created at any point in the medium. By comparing with the case of no energy loss, a ratio has been determined that is analogous to the nuclear modification factor for minijets. Phenomenological reality of such distributions is examined by calculating the hadronization of the minijets in the recombination model. Good fits of the data on pion, kaon and proton production throughout the intermediate \ppt\ region have been obtained by adjusting the parameters controlling the magnitude of the thermal partons and the degradation rates of the semihard partons. The result gives support to the minijet spectra at any centrality on the one hand, and the hadronization procedure used on the other. An important property made manifest in this study is that quarks and gluons must not lose energy in the same way because the partons form mesons and baryons differently by recombination and the momenta of quarks and gluons must be degraded at different rates in order to reproduce the experimental pion and proton spectra. This is a feature that renders invalid the notion of parton-hadron duality or other hadronization schemes based on similar ideas.

Spatial imaging of polarized deuterons at the Electron-Ion Collider

We study diffractive vector meson production at small-$x$ in the collision of electrons and polarized deuterons $e+d^{\uparrow}$. We consider the polarization dependence of the nuclear wave function of the deuteron, which results in an azimuthal angular dependence of the produced vector meson when the deuteron is transversely polarized. The Fourier coefficients extracted from the azimuthal angular dependence of the vector meson differential cross-section exhibit notable differences between longitudinally and transversely polarized deuterons. The angular dependence of the extracted effective deuteron radius provides direct insight into the structure of the polarized deuteron wave function. Furthermore, we observe slightly increased gluon saturation effects when the deuteron is longitudinally polarized compared to the transversely polarized case. The small-$x$ observables studied in this work will be accessible at the future Electron-Ion Collider.

Spin Teleportation via Bell-Triplet States Emergent from Proton-Proton Scattering

Entanglement is a key resource in quantum information science, yet its properties and applications in nuclear systems remain largely unexplored. Here, using proton-proton scattering as a quantum laboratory, we report the emergence of a near-pure Bell-triplet state at a laboratory energy of 151 MeV and a center-of-mass scattering angle of 90 degrees. In this unique kinematic regime, the scattering amplitude functions as a transition operator connecting distinct Bell states. Building upon this emergent resource, we propose a quantum teleportation protocol for proton spins, exploiting the intrinsic Hamiltonian of the strong interaction to perform the requisite Bell measurement effectively. These findings effectively bridge few-body nuclear physics and quantum technology, establishing proton-proton scattering as both a source of high-fidelity entanglement and a natural processor for quantum information.

Hadronic description of nuclear matter and neutron star properties

The composition of the neutron star is one of the most fundamental and long-standing problems in nuclear- and astro-physics. The known properties of nuclear matter, together with the astronomical observations, impose the stringent and interconnected constraints on the theoretical descriptions. In this work, by using the most general quantum hadrodynamics model including $σ, ω, ρ$ and $a_0$ in addition to nucleons, and performing a Bayesian joint analysis of experimental nuclear matter data, the heavy-ion flow pressure, and astrophysical observations including the mass-radius inferences of PSR J0740+6620, PSR J0437$-$4715, PSR J0614$-$3329 and HESS J1731$-$347 and the tidal posterior of GW170817, we point out that the nuclear matter made of only hadrons can provide a unified description of nuclear matter properties and astrophysical observations. In addition, we find that the speed of sound in the GQHD develops a non-monotonic, peak-like structure which is absent in the Walecka-type models TM1, NL3 and FSU-$\delta6.7$. This soft-to-stiff transition, accompanied by a pronounced softening of the symmetry energy, results in small size intermediate mass neutron stars, $R_{1.4}\simeq (11.1-11.4)$~km, together with the maximum mass $(2.2-2.3)M_\odot$, and, to our knowledge, has not been found before in the Walecka-type relativistic mean-field models. What we find here indicate that the sequential measurement of neutron star mass and radius by the next generation facilities, especially that of the intermediate mass neutron stars, is crucial for distinguishing the pure nucleonic stars from the hybrid ones.
