Pionic and Hidden-Color, Six-Quark Contributions to the Deuteron b1 Structure Function

Abstract

The b1 structure function is an observable feature of a spin-1 system sensitive to non-nucleonic components of the target nuclear wave function. The contributions of exchanged pions in the deuteron are estimated and found to be of measurable size for small values of x. A simple model for a hidden-color, six-quark configurations (with~ 0.15% probability to exist in the deuteron) is proposed and found to give substantial contributions for values of x>0.2. Good agreement with Hermes data is obtained. Predictions are made for an upcoming JLab experiment. The Close & Kumano sum rule is investigated and found to be a useful guide to understanding various possible effects that may contribute.

Probing the Dependence of Partonic Energy Loss on the Initial Energy Density of the Quark Gluon Plasma

Considerable evidence now exists for partonic energy loss due to interaction with the hot, dense medium created in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. A primary signal of this energy loss is the suppression of high transverse momentum $p_{\mathrm{T}}$ hadron yields in A-A collisions relative to appropriately scaled $pp$ collisions at the same energy. Measuring the collision energy dependence of this energy loss is vital to understanding the medium, but it is difficult to disentangle the medium-driven energy loss from the natural kinematic variance of the steeply-falling $p_{\mathrm{T}}$ spectra across different $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$. To decouple these effects, we utilize a phenomenologically motivated spectrum shift model to estimate the average transverse momentum loss $Δp_{\mathrm{T}}$ imparted on high $p_{\mathrm{T}}$ partons in A-A collisions, a proxy for the medium induced energy loss. We observe a striking correlation between $Δp_{\mathrm{T}}$ and Glauber-derived estimates of initial state energy density $\varepsilon_{\mathrm{Bj}}$, consistent across two orders of magnitude in collision energy for a variety of nuclear species. To access the path-length dependence of energy loss, we couple our model to geometric event shape estimates extracted from Glauber calculations to produce predictions for high-$p_{\mathrm{T}}$ hadron elliptic flow $v_2$ that agree reasonably with data.

Revised analysis of the strengths of the contact potential at N4LO through nuclear and neutron matter

We examine the contact three-nucleon force at N4LO expressed as a density dependent potential. In Ref. [1], the necessary couplings (13, including two that appear in the leading three-nucleon force), were extracted from nd scattering observables. The contact strengths obtained through the three-nucleon continuum, without ?ts to the triton, seem incompatible with the energy of nuclear and neutron matter. We take the opportunity to revisit the role of the cD, cE couplings of the leading three-nucleon force in nuclear matter and nuclei. We close with a discussion about recent ?ttings of three-nucleon scattering observables using a spectroscopic basis for the subleading contact three-nucleon force. Using the errors given for the couplings in the spectroscopic basis, we derive uncertainty bands for the strengths in the operator basis and their contributions to the leading and subleading three-nucleon contact interactions.

\textit{Ab initio} no-core shell model calculations of the electric dipole polarizabilities and photoabsorption cross sections of the $A=3$ mirror nuclei

We present \textit{ab initio} no-core shell-model calculations of the electric dipole ($E1$) polarizabilities and photoabsorption cross sections of the $A=3$ mirror nuclei $^3$H and $^3$He using the Daejeon16 nucleon-nucleon interaction. The polarizabilities are obtained by direct summation over discretized continuum states in the harmonic-oscillator basis, while the same spectral information is used to reconstruct the cross sections. This work provides the first extension of the approach from the spin-zero $^4$He to nonzero-spin nuclei by calculating the $1/2^-$ and $3/2^-$ final-state contributions separately and demonstrating their model-space convergence. In both nuclei, the $3/2^-$ contribution is approximately twice the $1/2^-$ contribution. After quantifying finite-basis and excitation-energy-truncation uncertainties, we identify a clear difference between the mirror polarizabilities, induced entirely by the Coulomb interaction because the Daejeon16 interaction is isospin symmetric. The reconstructed cross sections remain stable under variations of the inversion parameters of the Lorentz integral transform and exhibit the same angular-momentum hierarchy. These results extend the discretized-continuum approach to integrated and energy-resolved $E1$ observables in nonzero-spin nuclei with multiple final-state angular momenta.
