Fermi-surface topological phase transition and horizontal order-parameter nodes in CaFe$_2$As$_2$ under pressure

Abstract

Iron-based compounds (IBS) display a surprising variety of superconducting properties that seems to arise from the strong sensitivity of these systems to tiny details of the lattice structure. In this respect, systems that become superconducting under pressure, like CaFe$_2$As$_2$, are of particular interest. Here we report on the first directional point-contact Andreev-reflection spectroscopy (PCARS) measurements on CaFe$_2$As$_2$ crystals under quasi-hydrostatic pressure, and on the interpretation of the results using a 3D model for Andreev reflection combined with ab-initio calculations of the Fermi surface (within the density functional theory) and of the order parameter symmetry (within a random-phase-approximation approach in a ten-orbital model). The almost perfect agreement between PCARS results at different pressures and theoretical predictions highlights the intimate connection between the changes in the lattice structure, a topological transition in the hole-like Fermi surface sheet, and the emergence on the same sheet of an order parameter with a horizontal node line.

Finite-momentum superconductivity with singlet-triplet mixing in an altermagnetic metal: A pairing instability analysis

We analyze the pairing instability of an altermagnetic metal on a square lattice driven by an attractive nearest-neighbor interaction. This interaction enables multiple pairing channels, including even-parity extended $s$-wave and $d$-wave states, as well as two odd-parity $p$-wave channels. We verify that altermagnetic spin-splitting in the single-particle dispersion gives rise to finite-momentum pairing between electrons with unlike spins, in agreement with earlier predictions. Quite unexpectedly, this pairing typically emerges across multiple channels with mixed parity. Consequently, the resulting finite-momentum Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) superconducting phase is expected to exhibit a multi-component order parameter featuring singlet-triplet mixing. We examine several forms of altermagnetism, specifically $d_{xy}$-wave and $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$-wave altermagnetic couplings, and present the corresponding phase diagrams. Additionally, we study triplet pairing between electrons with identical spins and find that it always occurs at zero center-of-mass momentum. Although it is unfavorable in the regime of weak altermagnetic coupling and low electron filling, it can dominate the phase diagram when the altermagnetic coupling is sufficiently strong. The influence of on-site attractive interactions on mixed-parity pairing is also explored.

Electron- and hole-doped superconductivity in two-dimensional electride ZrX$_2$ (X = Cl, Br, I)

Two-dimensional (2D) superconducting systems have recently emerged as a frontier in condensed matter physics, driven by their unique physical properties and potential applications. Using first-principles calculations, we show that monolayer ZrX$_2$ (X = Cl, Br, I), which is a family of 2D semiconducting electrides, hosts phonon-mediated superconductivity under both electron and hole dopings. Electron doping in ZrX$_{2}$ can achieve high superconducting transition temperatures at very low concentrations, with ZrBr$_2$ reaching $T_c = 30.0$ K at 0.01 \textit{e}/f.u., followed by ZrCl$_2$ (22.5 K at 0.05 \textit{e}/f.u.) and ZrI$_2$ (18.1 K at 0.01 \textit{e}/f.u.), for which the high $T_c$ originates from the flat conduction band minimum, with Van Hove singularities nearby enhancing the density of states. In contrast, hole doping requires higher concentrations (0.2--0.25 \textit{h}/f.u.) to activate superconductivity, yielding $T_c \sim 2$ K, and approaches a magnetic instability at elevated doping levels. By comparing with InSe and LaBr$_2$, we identify the spatial location and orbital character of excess electrons as key factors determining the strength of hole-doped superconductivity and the nature of competing orders. These findings establish monolayer ZrX$_2$ as a platform for bipolar superconductivity in a 2D electride and provide insights into flat-band engineering for high-$T_c$ superconductors.

Altermagnetic Control of Charge-4e Superconductivity

We present, to our knowledge, the first theoretical realization of an independent charge-4e phase in a two-dimensional classical array of conventional superconductors coupled through altermagnetic junctions. Tuning the altermagnetic splitting suppresses the leading single-pair tunneling harmonic while retaining strong double-pair coupling, producing a finite charge-4e region between staggered and uniform charge-2e states. Using the complete temperature-dependent microscopic Josephson spectrum, we find short-range ordinary pair correlations alongside algebraic coherence of pairs of Cooper pairs. Berezinskii--Kosterlitz--Thouless scaling and a half-flux response further identify the charge-4e phase. Our results establish altermagnetism as a microscopic means to select between ordinary and composite superconducting coherence.
