3D radiative transfer simulations of Eta Carinae's inner colliding winds - I. Ionization structure of helium at apastron

Abstract

The highly eccentric binary system Eta Carinae shows numerous time-variable emission and absorption features. These observational signatures are the result of interactions between the complex three-dimensional (3D) wind-wind collision regions and photoionization by the luminous stars. Specifically, helium presents several interesting spectral features that provide important clues on the geometry and physical properties of the system and the individual stars. We use the SimpleX algorithm to post-process 3D smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulation output of the interacting winds in Eta Car in order to obtain the fractions of ionized helium assuming three different primary star mass-loss rates. The resultant ionization maps constrain the regions where helium is singly- and doubly-ionized. We find that reducing the primary's mass-loss rate increases the volume of He+. Lowering the primary mass-loss rate produces large variations in the volume of He+ in the pre-shock primary wind on the periastron side of the system. Our results show that binary orientations in which apastron is on our side of the system are more consistent with available observations. We suggest that small variations in the primary's mass-loss rate might explain the observed increase in HeI absorption in recent decades, although numerous questions regarding this scenario remain open. We also propose that the absence of broad HeI lines in the spectra of Eta Car between its 1890's eruption and 1944 might be explained by the companion star's He0+ ionizing photons not being able to penetrate the wind-wind interaction region, due to a higher primary mass-loss rate at that time (by a factor >2, compared to the present value).

Phlegethon: a fully compressible magnetohydrodynamic code for simulations in stellar astrophysics

We present PHLEGETHON, a fully compressible, Eulerian magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) code designed for multidimensional simulations in stellar astrophysics. The code uses a time-explicit, second-order, finite-volume method optimized to model a wide range of dynamical processes in stars, from very low-Mach-number turbulent convection in the cores of massive stars to supersonic flows in subsurface convection zones. PHLEGETHON employs low-dissipation Riemann solvers and a well-balanced method to accurately capture slow flows arising from strongly stratified media. The induction equation is solved using a staggered constrained-transport method to ensure divergence-free evolution of the magnetic field. The MHD equations are coupled to arbitrary nuclear reaction networks solved in a time-implicit approach, together with super-time-stepping for efficient treatment of thermal diffusion. Equations of state appropriate for stellar plasmas are available, accounting for partial ionization, electron degeneracy, and electron-positron pair production. The code is implemented in a compact and user-friendly manner, and it scales to tens of thousands of CPU cores using MPI-based domain decomposition. We perform several verification tests to demonstrate the accuracy and versatility of the code, and present simulations of magnetoconvection in a core-collapse supernova progenitor star. The rich variety of physical effects and numerical methods implemented in PHLEGETHON enables the code to model diverse multidimensional processes that play a crucial role in stellar-interior dynamics, such as reactive convection, convective boundary mixing, internal-wave excitation, and magnetic-field amplification mechanisms. Within a single framework, these phenomena can be investigated across a wide range of stellar evolutionary stages, from main-sequence stars to supernova progenitors. PHLEGETHON is publicly accessible online.

The Solar Neighborhood LVI: The RMSTAR Catalog of the Nearest 3352 M Dwarf Systems and 305 of their Wide Companions

We present the RMSTAR (RECONS M STAR) catalog, a 25 pc volume-limited and effectively volume-complete sample of the nearest 3352 M dwarf systems and their 305 wide stellar and 9 brown dwarf companions. RMSTAR has been created using only results from Gaia Data Releases 3 (GDR3) and 2 (GDR2), Hipparcos, and ground-based discoveries of M dwarf systems that are not available in the space-based results. The wide companions are identified using only results from GDR3 and GDR2, and have separations $ρ\ge0.''46$. There are 291 primaries with stellar companions, yielding a multiplicity rate of 8.68$\pm$0.49% for these widely separated systems, with a rate of 6.86$\pm$0.44% for projected separations $s\geq30$ au, where the sample of stellar companions is complete except perhaps for a few fringe cases. It is shown that the rate of stellar companions increases from the search limit of 30,000 au down to separations of 30 au, with a large set of companions to be characterized at closer separations in future work. We determine luminosity and mass functions for all stellar red dwarfs and their wide secondaries, finding that the luminosity function displays a classic turnover at $M_G\sim11$, whereas the mass function is described by an exponential function that rises from 0.60 M$_{\odot}$ to the end of the stellar main sequence at 0.075 M$_{\odot}$. We assess the large population of close, unresolved companions to M dwarfs by analyzing several Gaia parameters, identifying 1089 (30%) individual sources as having at least one of these elevated unresolved companion indication parameters.

Power balance and anomalous exchange in post-AGB pulsations

We develop a complex balance relation for stellar pulsations whose real and imaginary parts give paired relations for the excitation rate and oscillation frequency. The formulation includes thermodynamic exchange, boundary power, and the inertial, compression, horizontal-area, and gravitational-stratification terms, without assuming weak nonadiabaticity. Applied to portions of an envelope, it provides cumulative diagnostics evaluated using the eigenfrequency and eigenfunctions of the complete pulsation problem. We show that a negligible global boundary contribution can coexist with substantial internal boundary power, which may largely compensate the thermodynamic exchange within the envelope. Applications to radial pulsations of post-AGB envelopes illustrate this behaviour for ordinary, strange, and anomalous-exchange modes. The latter have a negative effective norm and opposite signs of net exchange power and excitation rate. For a selected excited anomalous mode, the principal exchange occurs between the He II ionization region and the Z-bump, with less participation from the outer ionization layers than in the comparison modes. Classification by the largest response norm reveals distinct domains across the examined pulsation spectrum. The selected anomalous branch retains horizontal-area dominance across its transition from damping to excitation.
