A compact design for the Josephson mixer: the lumped element circuit

Abstract

We present a compact and efficient design in terms of gain, bandwidth and dynamical range for the Josephson mixer, the superconducting circuit performing three-wave mixing at microwave frequencies. In an all lumped-element based circuit with galvanically coupled ports, we demonstrate non degenerate amplification for microwave signals over a bandwidth up to 50 MHz for a power gain of 20 dB. The quantum efficiency of the mixer is shown to be about 70$\%$ and its saturation power reaches $-112$ dBm.

Phase Transitions in Disordered Altermagnetic Josephson Junctions

Altermagnetic Josephson junctions (AMJJs) can host unconventional $π$ phase and $φ$ phase despite vanishing net magnetizations. Whether these phases are stable against disorder existing in real materials remains an open question. Here, we investigate impact of disorder on exotic phases in two-dimensional AMJJs consisting of two conventional superconductors mediated by a $d$-wave altermagnet. We show that disorder is able to drive phase transitions from the exotic $π$ phase to conventional $0$ phase, accompanied by a substantial suppression of critical current. This behavior is attributed to modifications of the tunneling Cooper-pair phase shift and superconducting decoherence. Remarkably, the anomalous $φ$ phase is highly fragile in presence of disorder and can be driven to either a $π$ phase or $0$ phase in a nonreciprocal way. Across such transitions, the first harmonic of current-phase relation changes its sign, while the higher-order harmonics are rapidly suppressed. Our findings reveal the crucial role of disorder in tailoring distinct phases of AMJJs and shed new light on their potential functionalities.

Optical manifestations of loop currents in Haldane's model and in time-reversal-breaking superconductors

We present a theoretical study of optical manifestations of loop currents in Haldane's model and in time-reversal-breaking superconductors. For Haldane's model, we calculate the expectation value of loop currents in terms of model parameters and relate it with the integrated optical spectral weight for the frequency-dependent ac Hall conductivity. Thus, experimental measurements of the latter can provide information about the presence and magnitude of steady loop currents in the system. Then we elaborate on loop currents in a chiral superconductor on the honeycomb lattice, studied earlier by Brydon et al. (2019). We demonstrate that a sharp optical absorption peak in the ac Hall conductivity originates from excitations between the lower and upper Dirac bands, activated by the time-reversal-breaking superconductivity. The frequency of the peak is twice the energy difference between the Fermi level and the Dirac point. The optical spectral weight of the peak is directly related to the magnitude of loop currents induced in the unit cells by the chiral superconducting pairing, in similarity to Haldane's model.

$1/3$-Flux Bound States in Multicomponent Superconductor Exhibiting Non-Abelian Statistics of $\mathbb {Z}_3$ Parafermions

Multicomponent superconductors (MSCs) are predicted to host magnetic flux quanta carrying arbitrary fractions of the superconducting flux quantum. Recent advances have raised the expectation that $1/3$ flux quanta may emerge in MSCs with $C_3$ rotational symmetry. Electrons bound to such fractional flux are long regarded to form anyons, yet their explicit braiding statistics remain unexplored. We propose that these $1/3$-flux bound states ($1/3$-FBSs) exhibit the intriguing non-Abelian statistics of $\mathbb{Z}_3$ parafermions. Under no-double-occupancy constraint, two successive braiding operations of $1/3$-FBSs are equivalent to a single $\mathbb Z_3$ parafermion braiding operation. The parafermion parity encoding the braiding outcome can be read out via the fermionic occupation number of the $1/3$-FBSs. Combined with a crossed-Andreev-reflection-induced Hadamard gate, one can realize the complete set of $\mathbb{Z}_3$ parafermion braiding operations.
