Measurement of D$_s^+$ production and nuclear modification factor in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=2.76$ TeV

Abstract

The production of prompt D$_s^+$ mesons was measured for the first time in collisions of heavy nuclei with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The analysis was performed on a data sample of Pb-Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair, $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$, of 2.76 TeV in two different centrality classes, namely 0-10% and 20-50%. D$_s^+$ mesons and their antiparticles were reconstructed at mid-rapidity from their hadronic decay channel D$_s^+\rightarrowϕπ^+$, with $ϕ\rightarrow$K$^-$K$^+$, in the transverse momentum intervals $4< p_{\rm T}<12$ GeV/$c$ and $6< p_{\rm T}<12$ GeV/$c$ for the 0-10% and 20-50% centrality classes, respectively. The nuclear modification factor $R_{\rm AA}$ was computed by comparing the $p_{\rm T}$-differential production yields in Pb-Pb collisions to those in proton-proton (pp) collisions at the same energy. This pp reference was obtained using the cross section measured at $\sqrt{s}= 7$ TeV and scaled to $\sqrt{s}= 2.76$ TeV. The $R_{\rm AA}$ of D$_s^+$ mesons was compared to that of non-strange D mesons in the 10% most central Pb-Pb collisions. At high $p_{\rm T}$ ($8< p_{\rm T}<12$ GeV/$c$) a suppression of the D$_s^+$-meson yield by a factor of about three, compatible within uncertainties with that of non-strange D mesons, is observed. At lower $p_{\rm T}$ ($4< p_{\rm T}<8$ GeV/$c$) the values of the D$_s^+$-meson $R_{\rm AA}$ are larger than those of non-strange D mesons, although compatible within uncertainties. The production ratios D$_s^+$/D$^0$ and D$_s^+$\D$^+$ were also measured in Pb-Pb collisions and compared to their values in proton-proton collisions.

Measure charge transport in high-energy nuclear collisions with an energy scan of isobaric collisions

We present a method to measure electric-charge transport in high-energy nuclear collisions using a beam-energy scan of isobaric systems. Comparing collisions of nuclei with identical mass number but different atomic number allows the charge difference ($ΔQ$) to be extracted with a double-ratio technique that suppresses most experimental systematic uncertainties. By varying the beam energy, the rapidity gap ($Δy$) over which electric charge is transported can be systematically scanned. Simulations of Ru+Ru and Zr+Zr collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$=19.6-200GeV with UrQMD and PYTHIA Angantyr show that midrapidity $ΔQ$ decreases exponentially with increasing $Δy$, with the slope parameter exhibiting strong model dependence. Comparisons with the baryon number transport reveal distinct patterns. In both UrQMD and PYTHIA Angantyr (with and without final-state baryon junctions), where baryon number is carried solely by valence quarks, the rapidity slope for baryon transport is larger than that for electric-charge transport. In contrast, scenarios that include baryon junctions in the initial state are expected to produce the opposite trend. This demonstrates that an isobar beam-energy scan provides a sensitive probe of electric-charge transport and offers new constraints on the microscopic mechanisms governing conserved-charge redistribution in QCD matter.

Laser Spectroscopy of Thulium Isotopes Near the (N=82) Shell Closure: Nuclear Moment and Charge Radius of ${}^{152\mathrm{m}}\mathrm{Tm}$

We report on resonance ionization laser spectroscopy measurements performed on both neutron-deficient and neutron-rich thulium ($\mathrm{Tm}, Z=69$) isotopes. Isotope shifts were determined for three atomic ground-state transitions at wavelengths of $389.8\,\mathrm{nm}$, $388.4\,\mathrm{nm}$, and $388.8\,\mathrm{nm}$ in the isotopes ${}^{152\mathrm{m}}\mathrm{Tm}$, ${}^{153}\mathrm{Tm}$, ${}^{154\mathrm{m}}\mathrm{Tm}$, and ${}^{169}\mathrm{Tm}$. In addition, for the $389.8\,\mathrm{nm}$ transition, measurements were extended to the isotope ${}^{170}\mathrm{Tm}$, and the hyperfine structure was partially resolved for all five isotopes. For this transition, the isotope shift could be determined for one more isotope, ${}^{154\mathrm{m}}\mathrm{Tm}$. From the extracted hyperfine coupling constants, the nuclear magnetic dipole moment for ${}^{152\mathrm{m}}\mathrm{Tm}$ was determined for the first time, resulting in $μ\left({}^{152\mathrm{m}}\mathrm{Tm}\right) = 5.8(3) μ_\mathrm{N}$. Furthermore, the mean-square nuclear charge radius $δ\langle r^2\rangle^{152\mathrm{m},169} = -1.86(25)\,\mathrm{fm}^2$ for ${}^{152\mathrm{m}}\mathrm{Tm}$ was extracted from the measured isotope shifts.

Reinvestigation of the Yield of the Trinity Device

Previous published analyses of trinitite to determine the yield of the Trinity nuclear explosion used various estimates of the fraction of fission products that became incorporated in trinitite. Furthermore, these studies utilized nuclear data that has subsequently been revised. Utilizing a planar germanium detector, we observed gamma rays produced by the decays of both 137Cs and 239Pu from four samples of trinitite. From the observed 137Cs/239Pu ratios of and a simple analysis method based on current nuclear data and weapons debris studies, we find an average yield of 9.1+-4.5 kilotons from our four samples. While this result is substantially lower than the established total yield of 21 kilotons, it is in reasonable agreement that attributable to fissions in the 239Pu core alone.
