Discretization of C*-algebras

Abstract

We investigate how a C*-algebra could consist of functions on a noncommutative set: a discretization of a C*-algebra $A$ is a $*$-homomorphism $A \to M$ that factors through the canonical inclusion $C(X) \subseteq \ell^\infty(X)$ when restricted to a commutative C*-subalgebra. Any C*-algebra admits an injective but nonfunctorial discretization, as well as a possibly noninjective functorial discretization, where $M$ is a C*-algebra. Any subhomogenous C*-algebra admits an injective functorial discretization, where $M$ is a W*-algebra. However, any functorial discretization, where $M$ is an AW*-algebra, must trivialize $A = B(H)$ for any infinite-dimensional Hilbert space $H$.

On Relative Biexactness of Amalgamated Free Product von Neumann Algebras

Given weakly exact tracial von Neumann algebras $M_{1}, M_{2}$ with a common injective von Neumann subalgebra $B$, we prove that the amalgamated free product $M_{1}\overline{*}_{B}M_{2}$ is biexact relative to $\{M_{1},M_{2}\}$. When $M_1$ and $M_2$ are injective but not necessarily tracial, we further show that $M_{1}\overline{*}_{B}M_{2}$ is biexact relative to the amalgam $B$, and if $B$ is mixing in each of $M_1$ and $M_2$, $M_{1}\overline{*}_{B}M_{2}$ itself is biexact. We also develop a new criterion for upgrading relative biexactness and obtain structural decomposition and subalgebra absorption results for amalgamated free product von Neumann algebras that generalize the group case.

Equivalence of categories of bivariant K-theory for C*-algebras over topological spaces via reflection functors

In this paper, for various pairs of topological spaces $X$ and $Y$, we introduce an analogue of the Bernšte\uın-Gel'fand-Ponomarev reflection functors between the categories of C*-algebras over $X$ and $Y$. We prove that these functors induce equivalences $\mathfrak{KK}(X)_{\mathrm{loc}} \simeq \mathfrak{KK}(Y)_{\mathrm{loc}}$ between Meyer and Nest's localizing subcategories in Kirchberg's ideal-related KK-theory, and $\mathfrak{E}(X) \simeq \mathfrak{E}(Y)$ between the entire categories in Dadarlat and Meyer's ideal-related E-theory. Both equivalences restrict to the respective bootstrap categories: $\mathcal{B}(X) \simeq \mathcal{B}(Y)$ and $\mathcal{B}_{\mathrm{E}}(X) \simeq \mathcal{B}_{\mathrm{E}}(Y)$. Combining these equivalences with a combinatorial argument in quiver representation theory, we obtain the same equivalences for any two finite $T_0$-spaces whose Hasse diagrams are orientations of the same tree. Moreover, we prove a rearrangement property of reflection functors, which yields an analogue of Coxeter functors. Finally, we apply reflection functors to give a conceptual alternative proof of Bentmann and Köhler's universal coefficient theorem for filtrated K-theory over finite $T_0$-spaces whose Hasse diagrams are orientations of Dynkin diagrams of type A.

Commutative Counterexamples to Arveson's Hyperrigidity Conjecture

We construct counterexamples to Arveson's hyperrigidity conjecture for operator systems in commutative $C^*$-algebras. In each example, every irreducible representation of the $C^*$-envelope is a boundary representation, but hyperrigidity fails. The first example is the operator system of continuous affine functions on an infinite-dimensional weighted $\ell^p$ ball. In the second infinite-dimensional example, we start with commuting operators and construct a nontrivial dilation. The final example comes from a compact truncated epigraph of a strictly convex function and yields a finite-dimensional operator system.
