Invariant forms on irreducible modules of simple algebraic groups

Abstract

Let $G$ be a simple linear algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $K$ of characteristic $p \geq 0$ and let $V$ be an irreducible rational $G$-module with highest weight $λ$. When $V$ is self-dual, a basic question to ask is whether $V$ has a non-degenerate $G$-invariant alternating bilinear form or a non-degenerate $G$-invariant quadratic form. If $p \neq 2$, the answer is well known and easily described in terms of $λ$. In the case where $p = 2$, we know that if $V$ is self-dual, it always has a non-degenerate $G$-invariant alternating bilinear form. However, determining when $V$ has a non-degenerate $G$-invariant quadratic form is a classical problem that still remains open. We solve the problem in the case where $G$ is of classical type and $λ$ is a fundamental highest weight $ω_i$, and in the case where $G$ is of type $A_l$ and $λ= ω_r + ω_s$ for $1 \leq r < s \leq l$. We also give a solution in some specific cases when $G$ is of exceptional type. As an application of our results, we refine Seitz's $1987$ description of maximal subgroups of simple algebraic groups of classical type. One consequence of this is the following result. If $X < Y < \operatorname{SL}(V)$ are simple algebraic groups and $V \downarrow X$ is irreducible, then one of the following holds: (1) $V \downarrow Y$ is not self-dual; (2) both or neither of the modules $V \downarrow Y$ and $V \downarrow X$ have a non-degenerate invariant quadratic form; (3) $p = 2$, $X = \operatorname{SO}(V)$, and $Y = \operatorname{Sp}(V)$.

Subindices and subfactors of $\mathbb{Z}_n$ and $k$-index stability of finite groups

We study subindices, subfactors, and index stability in the cyclic group $\mathbb{Z}_n$. We prove several theorems that not only confirm a conjecture and resolve some open problems about index stability of such groups, but also provide basic tools for the characterization of finite $k$-index stable groups. As a consequence, we completely characterize all 2-element index stable subsets of $\mathbb{Z}_n$, obtain an exact closed formula for their density, and determine all $n$ for which every 2-subset is index unstable. Finally, we present some problems and a research project extending the study to 3-subsets and general $k$-subsets.

Virtually generating graphs of pro-$p$ groups

We study the virtually generating graph of pro-$p$ groups. We show that various classes of pro-$p$ groups have connected virtually generating graph and we bound its diameter in these cases; e.g.\ compact subgroups of analytic groups over local fields and the Nottingham group.

Surface subgroups of Baumslag doubles along short words

If $U$ is a minimal, diskbusting, finite list of words in a free group $F_n$ of rank $n$ such that the sum of the lengths of words in $U$ is at most $2n+4$, we prove that the natural presentation complex of the Baumslag double of $F_n$ along $U$ virtually contains a $π_1$-injective embedded closed hyperbolic surface. This verifies the Tiling Conjecture of Kim and Wilton for this type of lists of words, and in particular, implies that the corresponding Baumslag double contains a hyperbolic surface subgroup.
