Magnetic Field Induced Spin Liquids in S=1 Kitaev Honeycomb Model

Abstract

We investigate the ground state properties of the spin S=1 Kitaev honeycomb model under a magnetic field based on the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculation. With the time reversal symmetry breaking due to the magnetic field, a gapped Kitaev spin liquid is identified for both ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) Kitaev couplings. The topological nature of such Kitaev spin liquid is manifested by the nearly quantized Wilson loop, degeneracy in the entanglement spectra and existence of edge modes. While the FM Kitaev spin liquid is destroyed by a weaker magnetic field $H_*^\text{FM}$, the AFM one demonstrates a robustness up to an order of magnitude larger critical field $H_*^\text{AFM}$. Moreover, an intermediate nonmagnetic phase appears only for the AFM case at larger fields, $H_*^\text{AFM} < H < H_{**}^\text{AFM}$, before the transition to a high-field polarized paramagnet. The stability of the Kitaev spin liquid against the Heisenberg interactions is also examined. Our findings may further inspire the investigation of recently proposed S=1 Kitaev materials.

Origin of the magnetic ground state of Tb$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$

Magnetic-rare-earth pyrochlore iridates exhibit a rich variety of unconventional phases, driven by the complex interactions within and between the rare-earth and the iridium sublattices. In this study, we investigate the peculiar magnetic state of Tb$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$, where a component of the Tb$^{3+}$ moment orders perpendicular to its local Ising anisotropy axis. By means of neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering down to dilution temperatures, complemented by specific heat measurements, we show that this intriguing magnetic state is fully established at 1.5 K and we characterize its excitation spectrum across a broad range of energies. Our calculations reveal that bilinear interactions between Tb$^{3+}$ ions subjected to the Ir molecular field capture several key features of the experiments, but need to be supplemented to fully reproduce the observed behavior.

Suppression of local magnetic moment formation and paramagnetic exchange interactions in monolayer Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$

We study the electronic and magnetic properties of monolayer Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$ within the DFT+DMFT approach in the paramagnetic phase. We argue that this compound is sufficiently far from the local magnetic moment limit, demonstrating non-linear temperature dependencies of the partial inverse local and uniform magnetic susceptibilities in a broad temperature range. We find that in the regime of moderate Coulomb interactions ($U=3-4$ eV), the iron atoms located above and below the Ge plane carry a substantial local magnetic moment ($μ\gtrsim 4.5 μ_B$), while the iron atom located within the Ge plane does not exhibit any pronounced magnetic moment. At the same time, the RKKY-type exchange interactions between these two symmetry-nonequivalent types of atoms turn out to be crucial for stabilizing long-range ferromagnetic order in Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$. The estimated spin-wave stiffness and Curie temperature are in good agreement with the experimental data, indicating that a dynamical treatment of electron correlations in Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$ is essential to properly describe its partially itinerant magnetic behavior.

Nonperturbative Nonlinear Hall Effect in Nonequilibrium Steady States

The nonlinear Hall effect in quantum materials has attracted broad interest, yet most existing studies focus on the weak-field, perturbative regime. Here we develop a nonperturbative approach based on nonequilibrium steady-state Green's functions for dc-field-driven lattice systems, with dissipation and interactions incorporated through self-energies beyond the constant relaxation-time approximation and interband transitions treated alongside their intraband counterparts. Applied to a two-band semimetal model, our approach provides direct access to the strong-field Hall response beyond the nonperturbative crossover where the edge of the nonequilibrium distribution reaches Berry-curvature hot spots, a regime in which constant relaxation-time estimates and Berry curvature dipole calculations become unreliable. We further demonstrate that interaction and electron-phonon self-energies within dynamical mean-field theory can substantially change the Hall signal. Our framework enables quantitative simulations of nonequilibrium nonlinear Hall phenomena and provides guidance for strong-field transport experiments.
