Identifying highly influential travellers for spreading disease on a public transport system

Abstract

The recent outbreak of a novel coronavirus and its rapid spread underlines the importance of understanding human mobility. Enclosed spaces, such as public transport vehicles (e.g. buses and trains), offer a suitable environment for infections to spread widely and quickly. Investigating the movement patterns and the physical encounters of individuals on public transit systems is thus critical to understand the drivers of infectious disease outbreaks. For instance previous work has explored the impact of recurring patterns inherent in human mobility on disease spread, but has not considered other dimensions such as the distance travelled or the number of encounters. Here, we consider multiple mobility dimensions simultaneously to uncover critical information for the design of effective intervention strategies. We use one month of citywide smart card travel data collected in Sydney, Australia to classify bus passengers along three dimensions, namely the degree of exploration, the distance travelled and the number of encounters. Additionally, we simulate disease spread on the transport network and trace the infection paths. We investigate in detail the transmissions between the classified groups while varying the infection probability and the suspension time of pathogens. Our results show that characterizing individuals along multiple dimensions simultaneously uncovers a complex infection interplay between the different groups of passengers, that would remain hidden when considering only a single dimension. We also identify groups that are more influential than others given specific disease characteristics, which can guide containment and vaccination efforts.

Exact Community Recovery in Bipartite Networks

Community detection in bipartite networks is a fundamental problem in modern data analysis, with applications in recommendation systems, biological networks, and social network analysis. Unlike conventional unipartite graphs, bipartite networks consist of two distinct types of nodes with edges only connecting across types, so recovering latent communities requires estimating labels on the two node types. The stochastic co-blockmodel is a classical probabilistic framework for such networks, yet theoretical guarantees for exact community recovery in this setting remain limited, especially when the number of communities grows, the community sizes are unbalanced, or the degrees are heterogeneous. In this work, we prove that a simple spectral clustering algorithm based on the diagonal-deleted Gram matrix achieves exact recovery with high probability under mild conditions on sparsity, community balance, and the number of clusters. We further extend the result to the degree-corrected stochastic co-blockmodel, where each node carries its own degree heterogeneity parameter, and show that a row-normalized version of the same algorithm maintains the exact recovery guarantee. Extensive experiments validate our theoretical findings.

Informational Help-Seeking on Reddit Did Not Decline After ChatGPT

Did people stop asking other people for advice online once generative AI could answer their questions? Prior work on ChatGPT's effect on online help-seeking disagrees in both size and sign, in part because no study has compared affected communities against similar communities that AI cannot easily substitute for, over the same months. In this paper, we track monthly post counts in 26 Reddit informational communities against 90 size-comparable hobby communities over the same six calendar months before and after the launch of ChatGPT. We also repeat the entire analysis at 66 earlier dates, before ChatGPT existed, to see what our method reports when no ChatGPT-effect exists. We find that informational help-seeking did not decline. Our results rule out any decline in posting larger than 3.4%, far smaller than the 8% to 25% declines documented in prior work. Steady post counts could still be misleading if AI-written posts had replaced human ones. We test this possibility by scoring 274,411 posts and 223,775 comments with AI-text detectors, compared in a way that cancels out detector false-positives on human-written text. AI-written posts rose only 2-3 percentage points more in informational communities than in hobby communities, short of the 5.1 points that would be needed to hide even the smallest decline previously reported for Reddit. In addition, the comments people receive show no such rise at all. Why, then, do published studies disagree? Reddit community types were already drifting apart before ChatGPT existed, at rates comparable to every published estimate, and without same-time controls, that drift can look like an effect of generative AI. Our own largest estimate, an 18% fall in posts to low-stakes curiosity communities, matches its pre-existing trend. Humans still ask humans for help, and, as far as detection can tell, humans still answer them.

Echo Chambers and Information Brokers on Truth Social: A Study of Network Dynamics and Political Discourse

This study examines the structural dynamics of Truth Social, a politically aligned social media platform, during two major political events: the U.S. Supreme Court's overturning of Roe v. Wade and the FBI's search of Mar-a-Lago. Using a large-scale dataset of user interactions based on re-truths (platform-native reposts), we analyze how the network evolves in relation to fragmentation, polarization, and user influence. Our findings reveal a segmented and ideologically homogenous structure dominated by a small number of central figures. Political events prompt temporary consolidation around shared narratives, followed by rapid returns to fragmented, echo-chambered clusters. Centrality metrics highlight the disproportionate role of key influencers, particularly @realDonaldTrump, in shaping visibility and directing discourse. These results contribute to research on alternative platforms, political communication, and online network behavior, demonstrating how infrastructure and community dynamics together reinforce ideological boundaries and limit cross-cutting engagement.
