Is GRB 110715A the progenitor of FRB 171209?

Abstract

The physical origin of fast radio bursts (FRBs) is unknown. Young magnetars born from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have been suggested to be a possible central engine of FRBs. We test such a hypothesis by systematically searching for GRB-FRB spatial associations from 110 FRBs and 1440 GRBs. We find that one FRB event, FRB 171209, discovered by the Parkes telescope is spatially coincident with a historical long-duration GRB 110715A at $z=0.82$. The afterglow of GRB 110715A is consistent with being powered by a millisecond magnetar. The extragalactic dispersion measure of FRB 171209 is in excess of that contributed by the intergalactic medium, which can be interpreted as being contributed by a young supernova remnant associated with the GRB. Overall, the significance of the association is $(2.28 - 2.55) σ$. If the association is indeed physical, our result suggests that the magnetars associated with long GRBs can be the progenitors of at least some FRBs.

A Physics Informed Bayesian Neural Network for the Neutron Star Equation of State

We present a physics-informed Bayesian neural-network framework for inferring neutron-star equations of state from theoretical priors and propagating the resulting uncertainty to stellar observables. Trained on a representative set of hadronic EoSs, the model learns the equation of state through stochastic variational inference by representing the squared speed of sound with a bounded network output and obtaining the pressure by integration, so that causality, thermodynamic stability, and monotonicity are guaranteed by construction, with low-density nuclear and perturbative-QCD normalization anchors. Core EoSs are matched to an SLy4 crust and propagated through a unified Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff-plus-tidal solver to obtain posterior predictions in the mass-radius ($M$-$R$) and mass-tidal-deformability ($M$-$Λ$) planes. The physics-informed prior is then updated with current multi-messenger data: NICER radius measurements, the GW170817 tidal-deformability constraint, and the $2\,M_\odot$ maximum-mass bound; included directly in the variational objective. The observational update moves the canonical radius from $R_{1.4}=13.41\,\mathrm{km}$ in the prior to $R_{1.4}=12.74^{+0.97}_{-0.73}\,\mathrm{km}$ (nominal 90\% variational CI), with $Λ_{1.4}=428^{+249}_{-130}$ and $M_{\mathrm{max}}\gtrsim 2.0\,M_\odot$. This framework provides a non-parametric route from microphysical EoS uncertainty to neutron-star observables.

Temporal Invariance Is an Illusion: Time-Dependent Influences of the Galactic Magnetic Field on UHECR Observations

Understanding the origin of the Ultra-High-Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECRs) requires explaining the features of their energy spectrum, mass composition, and arrival directions. Current modeling approaches neglect the time evolution of UHECR observables, a factor that is particularly important in the case of bursting UHECR sources. This study focuses on the influence of time delays caused by the galactic magnetic field (GMF) on the spectrum and arrival directions of UHECRs observed on Earth. Using CRPropa 3.2, we investigate the rigidity-dependence of the residence time of extragalactic cosmic rays entering our Galaxy. We find that UHECRs entering the Milky Way can experience delays of hundreds of kiloyears relative to light, and we demonstrate that these delays significantly alter the UHECR observables. Notably, a cutoff emerges in the transient scenario within the rigidity range of $10^{18}-10^{19}$ V, which coincides with the spectral break observed in data. We find a progressive shift in composition favoring heavier nuclei, as well as a delay distribution that is correlated with GMF strength. This causes the particles to be less correlated with their initial direction the larger their delays. A dipole-like anisotropy develops over timescales of about $\sim$100 kyr in certain bursts scenarios. Our results provide an alternative explanation for the UHECR spectral cutoff that does not invoke limits on source acceleration. This could potentially revise existing constraints.

Time-dependent cosmic-ray escape from wind bubbles: hard spectra formation

Overview: Wind-driven bubbles are dynamic systems that can accelerate cosmic rays, depending on their physical properties, up to very high energies. We investigate how a time-dependent description of the particle transport may impact the escaping cosmic-ray flux. Model: The wind bubble system is modeled as spherically symmetric. Cosmic rays are continuously injected at the position of the termination shock and propagate through advection and diffusion until the escape at the time-dependent position of the forward shock, which is treated as a free escape boundary. Methods: The one-dimensional spherical time-dependent transport equation is solved by transforming it into the corresponding set of stochastic differential equations, and integrated with a modified version of the open source cosmic-ray propagation framework CRPropa. Results: We find that, during the wind driven phase, the downstream escaping spectra from wind bubbles can be harder than $\sim E^{-2}$, the conventional expectation from diffusive shock acceleration. Depending on the turbulence model the initial energy spectrum can be significantly suppressed at lowest energies, which could be an observable feature to distinguish between different turbulence realizations. This effect could lead to an efficient confinement of low energy particles, potentially leading to observable implication in terms of multi-messenger radiation and cosmic-ray accumulated grammage within the bubble.
