Double canard cycles in singularly perturbed planar systems with two canard points

Abstract

We consider double canard cycles including two canards in singularly perturbed planar systems with two canard points. Previous work studied the complex oscillations including relaxation oscillations and canard cycles in singularly perturbed planar systems with one-parameter layer equations, which have precisely one canard point, two jump points or one canard point and one jump point. Based on the normal form theory, blow-up technique and Melnikov theory, we investigate double canard cycles induced by two Hopf breaking mechanisms at two non-degenerate canard points. Finally, we apply the obtained results to a class of cubic Lienard equations with quadratic damping.

Beyond Poincar{é} recurrence: on a topological trichotomy of orbits and on the dependence of limit sets for flows on surfaces

This paper investigates the global structure of orbits for continuous flows on surfaces. One of our main results provides a topological trichotomy of orbits of flows with finitely many connected components of the singular point set on surfaces with finite genus and finite ends: each orbit is either recurrent, wandering, or corresponds to a circuit with wandering holonomy or a strictly limit circuit, two new concepts that we introduce in this paper. These concepts capture non-recurrent behaviors lying beyond the reach of classical tools such as the Poincar{é} recurrence theorem and the Poincar{é}-Bendixson theorem. Moreover, the non-recurrent non-wandering behaviors reveal the dependency between the existence of infinitely many non-degenerate $ω$-limit sets and $α$-limit sets, and provide a necessary and sufficient condition for a flow to be minimal on (possibly non-compact) surfaces.

Torus Bifurcation in the Hopf-Langford type system through Averaging Theory

We study the existence of periodic solutions and invariant tori bifurcating from a zero-Hopf equilibrium in a Hopf-Langford type system. Using second-order averaging theory, we establish explicit parameter conditions under which the system admits a periodic solution near the origin, together with its stability. We then apply recent results relating invariant tori to Neimark-Sacker bifurcations of the associated Poincaré map to obtain a smooth bifurcation curve along which a unique invariant torus surrounds the periodic solution. The relevant first Lyapunov coefficient is computed explicitly as a power series in the perturbation parameter, and we show that, under the conditions considered, this coefficient is always positive; consequently, whenever it exists, the bifurcating torus is unstable, regardless of the specific parameter values chosen within our hypotheses. This provides a structural obstruction to the existence of asymptotically stable tori in this family of systems. We illustrate our results with two numerical examples, one exhibiting an isolated asymptotically stable periodic solution with no bifurcating torus, and another exhibiting a periodic solution surrounded by an unstable invariant torus, the latter also illustrated through its Poincaré map.

On fluctuations of the drift in hyperbolic groups

Let $Γ$ refer to a convex-cocompact group of isometries of a CAT($-1$) space $X$ and $Y \to X/Γ$ to a Galois cover with a word-hyperbolic group of deck transformations. We show that, for almost every geodesic $ξ$ with respect to the Bowen-Margulis-Sullivan measure on the lift of $X/Γ$, there exist $\mathfrak{m}, σ> 0$ and a standard Brownian motion $B_s$ such that, for any $λ> 1/4$, \[ d(p(g_s (ξ)), \mathbf{o}) = \mathfrak{m}s + σB_s + o(s^λ), \] with $g_s$ referring to the geodesic flow acting on the geodesics of $Y$ and $p(g_s)$ to the canonical projection to $Y$. The result is a consequence of an almost sure invariance principle for random walks on hyperbolic groups with dependent increments, whose proof makes use of a new Ruelle operator theorem for skew products and Martin boundary techniques for random walks with dependent increments.
