A classification theorem for compact Cauchy horizons in vacuum spacetimes

Abstract

We establish a complete classification theorem for the topology and for the null generators of compact non-degenerate Cauchy horizons of time orientable smooth vacuum $3+1$-spacetimes. We show that, either: (i) all generators are closed, or (ii) only two generators are closed and any other densely fills a two-torus, or (iii) every generator densely fills a two-torus, or (iv) every generator densely fills the horizon. We then show that, respectively to (i)-(iv), the horizon's manifold is either: (i') a Seifert manifold, or (ii') a lens space, or (iii') a two-torus bundle over a circle, or, (iv') a three-torus. All the four possibilities are known to arise in examples. In the last case, (iv), (iv'), we show in addition that the spacetime is indeed flat Kasner, thus settling a problem posed by Isenberg and Moncrief for ergodic horizons. The results of this article open the door for a full parameterization of the metrics of all vacuum spacetimes with a compact Cauchy horizon. The method of proof permits direct generalizations to higher dimensions.

Global causality constraints in rotating scalar-tensor spacetimes

Modified gravity is often formulated as an effective field theory (EFT), where higher-order corrections parametrize departures from General Relativity. We argue that such corrections should be constrained by the global causal structure of curved spacetime, in addition to the usual flat-space requirements such as positivity and unitarity. We propose that within the domain of validity of the EFT, the onset of closed timelike curves should not happen in a parametrically more accessible region than in the corresponding GR background. We test this diagnostic in the quadratic k-essence sector of scalar-tensor gravity. For stationary and axisymmetric spacetimes, the invariant test for closed axial orbits is the sign of the azimuthal component of the metric \(g_{φφ}\). We supplement this test by requiring a local time function in the space of Killing vectors. We apply these conditions to quadratic k-essence on Kerr--(A)dS backgrounds, with and without scalar charge. The zero-charge branch is exact Kerr--(A)dS, and we treat the charged branch perturbatively in scalar charge and in Hartle--Thorne slow rotation. Expanding for small spin \(χ=a/(GM)\ll1\), frame dragging begins at \(\mathcal O(χ)\), while the quadrupolar backreaction relevant for circular closed timelike curves enters at second order in both rotation and charge. We find that, in the truncation used here, any occurrence of \(g_{φφ}<0\) also lies outside EFT control. A higher-order calculation or a fully nonlinear treatment is therefore needed. Finally, we discuss how quasinormal modes and black-hole echoes could probe such causal structure.

Entanglement, Discord, and Residual Coherence in Scalar-Induced Gravitational Waves

Scalar-induced gravitational waves (SIGWs) are usually characterized by their power spectrum, although their quadratic scalar source also carries higher-order correlation information. We investigate whether phase-sensitive correlations of a primordial Gaussian scalar state can survive decoherence and be transferred to the induced tensor sector. The scalar state is described in a fixed oscillator basis by the occupation $N_k^ζ$ and anomalous moment $M_k^ζ$, while the transfer is formulated through the unequal-time scalar Wightman function. The late-time tensor moments $d_k$ and $γ_k$ define an effective Gaussian reference state and its discord, whereas the exact SIGW state is generally non-Gaussian and contains an additional connected fourth-order cumulant. We therefore introduce the baseline-subtracted observable $Δκ_{\rm coh}=κ_N[G^>_{\rm coh}]-κ_N[G^>_{\rm ref}]$. For phase damping with $M_k^ζ\propto e^{-D_k}$, the Gaussian-reference contribution conditionally scales as $|γ_k|\propto e^{-2D_k}$ and $κ_N^{\rm G}\propto e^{-4D_k}$. This provides a framework in which the SIGW spectrum fixes the signal band, while higher-order statistics probe residual coherence beyond the power spectrum.

Accretion of a Plasma Vlasov Gas onto a Reissner-Nordström Black Hole

We develop a steady-state, spherically symmetric accretion model for a two-component plasma Vlasov gas in the background of a Reissner--Nordström black hole. Analytical expressions in parametric form for the critical angular momentum and impact parameter are derived for each species, leading to a rigorous partition of the absorption and scattering domains in phase space. For both monoenergetic and Jüttner distributions, electromagnetic attraction enhances, while repulsion suppresses, the particle number density, energy density, pressure and accretion rates of individual charged components relative to the neutral case. After proper normalization, the total physical quantities of the plasma (under non-extreme conditions) can be expressed exactly, or to high accuracy, as weighted averages of the two species. When the two components share identical distribution functions, accretion drives the Reissner--Nordström black hole naturally toward the Schwarzschild limit---a charge evolution that is absent in neutral-gas models. Numerical results further reveal that near the horizon the radial pressure is significantly smaller than the tangential pressure, sharply distinguishing the Vlasov gas from a perfect fluid.
