Topological Polarization Singularities in Metaphotonics

Abstract

Polarization singularities of vectorial electromagnetic fields locate at the positions (such as points, lines, or surfaces) where properties of polarization ellipses are not defined. They are manifested as circular and linear polarization, for which respectively the semi-major axes and normal vectors of polarization ellipses become indefinite. First observed in conical diffraction in the 1830s, the field of polarization singularities has been systematically reshaped and deepened by many pioneers of wave optics. Together with other exotic phenomena such as non-Hermiticity and topology, polarization singularities have been introduced into the vibrant field of nanophotonics, rendering unprecedented flexibilities for manipulations of light-matter interactions at the nanoscale. Here we review the recent results on the generation and observation of polarization singularities in metaphotonics. We start with the discussion of polarization singularities in the Mie theory, where both electric and magnetic multipoles are explored from perspectives of local and global polarization properties. We then proceed with the discussion of various photonic-crystal structures, for which both near- and far-field patterns manifest diverse polarization singularities characterized by the integer Poincare or more general half-integer Hopf indices (topological charges). Next, we review the most recent studies of conversions from polarization to phase singularities in scalar wave optics, demonstrating how bound states in the continuum can be exploited to generate directly optical vortices of various charges. Throughout our paper, we discuss and highlight several fundamental concepts and demonstrate their close connections and special links to metaphotonics. We believe polarization singularities can provide novel perspectives for light-matter manipulation for both fundamental studies and their practical applications.

Efficient third-harmonic generation in high-Q tantalum pentoxide microcavities

Nonlinear harmonic generation in microcavities offers a compelling route toward energy efficient on-chip short-wavelength coherent light sources, enabled by tight optical confinement within compact mode volumes and flexible dispersion engineering. Tantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5) photonic platforms are particularly promising for realizing such nonlinear processes: their broad transparency window (280-8000 nm) supports broadband operation, their large bandgap suppresses two-photon absorption, and their thick-film deposition capability enables dispersion management--features that can collectively enhance the performance of nonlinear light sources. Here, we demonstrate, to the best of our knowledge, the first efficient third-harmonic generation (THG) in high-Q Ta2O5 microcavities. These microcavities feature smooth surfaces and high loaded Q factors up to 2.67X10^6, thereby facilitating nonlinear interactions. Through dispersion engineering, efficient THG is realized in both suspended microdisks and monolithic microrings under telecom-band continuous-wave laser pumping, as confirmed by optical spectra, visible-light microscopy, and the near-cubic pump-power dependence of the conversion efficiency. This work lays a foundation for chip-scale f-3f self-referencing of frequency combs and next-generation integrated nonlinear photonics.

Alignment-Free Optical Combining with Scalar-Message Expectation Propagation Detection for Distributed Multi-Aperture Coherent Reception

We propose an alignment-free distributed multi-aperture optical receiver with a single coherent front end, in which the differential delays between apertures are large. The branch signals are optically combined without inter-branch delay or phase alignment. Large differential delays produce separated tap clusters, forming a sparse ISI channel with long memory. Scalar-message expectation propagation exploits this sparsity to recover the transmitted symbols. Simulations show lower BER than equal-area single-aperture reception and no clear BER degradation over the tested delay spans. As the maximum differential delay increases from 100.5 to 200.5 symbol periods, the channel span nearly doubles, while the factor-graph edge count increases by only about 1.5\%. The trade-off is higher BER than ideal coherent combining schemes in exchange for fewer coherent front ends than digital combining and no inter-branch delay or phase alignment before optical combining.

Metasurface engineering of transient photothermal responses for vibrational imaging at living interfaces

Chemical transformations at biological interfaces are central to cellular function, yet the weak vibrational signals associated with subtle molecular changes limit their spatially resolved observation. Here, we present metasurface-driven mid-infrared photothermal imaging (MetaMIP), which uses resonantly engineered metasurfaces to amplify molecular temperature modulation while retaining rapid thermal recovery. Visible-light detection converts this response into submicrometre maps of individual nanoparticles and biological cells. In living cells, MetaMIP resolves spatially distinct chemical changes during enzymatic lipid conversion across the cell membrane. These results demonstrate the potential of engineered photothermal interfaces for mapping chemical composition and tracking its evolution during reactions.
