Second order trace formulae

Abstract

Koplienko \cite{Ko} found a trace formula for perturbations of self-adjoint operators by operators of Hilbert-Schmidt class $\mathcal{B}_2(\mathcal{H})$. Later, Neidhardt introduced a similar formula in the case of pair of unitaries $(U,U_0)$ via multiplicative path in \cite{NH}. In 2012, Potapov and Sukochev \cite{PoSu} obtained a trace formula like the Koplienko trace formula for pairs of contractions by answering an open question posed by Gesztesy, Pushnitski, and Simon in \cite[Open Question 11.2]{GePu}. In this article, we supply a new proof of the Koplienko trace formula in the case of pair of contractions $(T,T_0)$, where the initial operator $T_0$ is normal, via linear path by reducing the problem to a finite-dimensional one as in the proof of Krein's trace formula by Voiculescu \cite{Voi}, Sinha and Mohapatra \cite{MoSi94,MoSi96}. Consequently, we obtain the Koplienko trace formula for a class of pairs of contractions using the Schäffer matrix unitary dilation. Moreover, we also obtain the Koplienko trace formula for a pair of self-adjoint operators and maximal dissipative operators using the Cayley transform. At the end, we extend the Koplienko-Neidhardt trace formula for a class of pair of contractions $(T,T_0)$ via multiplicative path.

Analytical obstructions to the weak approximation of Sobolev mappings into manifolds

For any integer $ p \geq 2 $, we construct a compact Riemannian manifold $ \mathcal{N} $ such that if $ \dim \mathcal{M} > p $, there is a map in the Sobolev space of mappings $ W^{1,p} (\mathcal{M}, \mathcal{N})$ which is not a weak limit of smooth maps into $ \mathcal{N} $ due to a mechanism of analytical obstruction. For $ p = 4n - 1 $, the target manifold can be taken to be the sphere $ \mathbb{S}^{2n} $ thanks to the construction by Whitehead product of maps with nontrivial Hopf invariant, generalizing the result by Bethuel for $ p = 4n -1 = 3$. The results extend to higher order Sobolev spaces $ W^{s,p} $, with $ s \in \mathbb{R} $, $s \geq 1 $, $ sp \in \mathbb{N}$, and $ sp \ge 2 $.

Weak null maximum and integration of families of multiplication operators

Let $X$ be a reflexive Hardy space or weighted Bergman space on the unit disk in the complex plane. For a bounded linear operator $S$ on $X$, let $\textrm{wem}(S):= \sup_{(f_n)} \limsup_n \|Sf_n\|$, that is, the supremum of cluster points of $n\mapsto \|S f_n\|$, where $(f_n)$ is any unit norm weakly null sequence. This quantity coincides with the essential norm on the reflexive weighted Bergman spaces. For a suitable family $\{ g_t : t\in]0,1[ \}$ of bounded analytic functions on the unit disk, we characterize when one can exchange $\textrm{wem}(\cdot)$ and integration over $t$ of the multiplication operators $M_{g_t}$, that is, when $\textrm{wem}( \int M_{g_t}\, dt ) = \int \textrm{wem}( M_{g_t} ) \, dt $; when the functions $g_t,t\in]0,1[$ can be continuously extended to the unit circle, we obtain a neat function-theoretic characterization.

Equilibrium in the Canonical Stackelberg Triopoly via Response Functions and Fixed Point Theory

We analyze a canonical extension of the Stackelberg duopoly to a sequential framework, where each firm strategically anticipates the reactions of all subsequent players. In a triopoly (three-firm) settings, we obtain existence and uniqueness of market equilibrium via a reformulation of the equilibrium conditions that draws on coupled fixed-point theory. Even with linear demand, convergence of myopic best-response dynamics is not guaranteed. A recursive equilibrium formulation enables the analysis of the limiting case as the number of participants grow.
