Evidence of Two-Source King Plot Nonlinearity in Spectroscopic Search for New Boson

Abstract

Optical precision spectroscopy of isotope shifts can be used to test for new forces beyond the Standard Model, and to determine basic properties of atomic nuclei. We measure isotope shifts on the highly forbidden ${}^2S_{1/2} \rightarrow {}^2F_{7/2}$ octupole transition of trapped $^{168,170,172,174,176}$Yb ions. When combined with previous measurements in Yb$^+$ and very recent measurements in Yb, the data reveal a King plot nonlinearity of up to 240$σ$. The trends exhibited by experimental data are explained by nuclear density functional theory calculations with the Fayans functional. We also find, with 4.3$σ$ confidence, that there is a second distinct source of nonlinearity, and discuss its possible origin.

Ionization rate vs. laser intensity determined from ion count vs. peak intensity due to neutral gas exposure to an 800 nm ultrashort pulsed laser

The optical cycle-averaged ionization rate of Ar, O$_2$, and N$_2$ vs. local instantaneous laser intensity $I$ for linear polarized 800 nm light is determined up to approx. 300 TW/cm$^2$ by numerically inverting published time-of-flight ion spectrometer data. The published Ar$^+$ collection efficiency of the microchannel plate (MCP) at the end of the spectrometer and its $I_0$ scale are recalibrated by fitting it to its high $I_0$ solution. The relative collection efficiencies of the other species are determined by published MCP cathode data. Results for O$_2$ are consistent with a reevaluation of published data used to determine its cross section $σ_8$ in the multiphoton (low $I$) regime.

Influence of Many-Body Dipole-Dipole Interactions on Excitation Transfer in a Dense Gas

We study non-radiative dipole-dipole induced excitation transfer in dense Rb vapour. We show that density dependence of characteristic time of the excitation diffusion changes from linear to non-linear for high Rb density. It is attributed to the breakdown of binary collisions approach to the dipole-dipole excitation transfer. It is shown that the observed result can be qualitatively described if the mean free path is replaced by mean interatomic distance for the chracteristic diffusion length.

Experimental Ni II Oscillator Strengths for Transitions from $3d^84d$ to $3d^84p$ Levels Measured Using High-resolution Fourier Transform Spectroscopy

We present the first experimentally measured oscillator strengths for Ni II 3d$^8$4d - 3d$^8$4p transitions. High-resolution Fourier transform spectra were recorded of Ni-He hollow cathode lamps, and intensity calibrated using deuterium standard lamps to determine relative intensities of Ni II emission lines between 200 and 395 nm. Branching fractions were determined for observed lines from 35 3d$^8$4d upper levels in total, and account for at least 95% of the predicted transition probability for 31 of these levels, with sufficient completeness to give reliable branching fractions. Combining our measured branching fractions with four experimental and 27 theoretically calculated energy level lifetimes provided absolute oscillator strengths for 174 lines, for which no previous experimental values exist. We compare the results with three sets of previously published theoretical calculations, illustrating the improvement of laboratory measurements for these atomic data. Please note: The transition probability datasets are withheld from this pre-print to ensure that only the peer-reviewed, definitive versions are released. This approach prevents the propagation of duplicate or inconsistent data across widely used atomic databases and modelling frameworks.
