Suppression of inter-band heating for random driving

Abstract

Heating to high-lying states strongly limits the experimental observation of driving induced non-equilibrium phenomena, particularly when the drive has a broad spectrum. Here we show that, for entire families of structured random drives known as random multipolar drives, particle excitation to higher bands can be well controlled even away from a high-frequency driving regime. This opens a window for observing drive-induced phenomena in a long-lived prethermal regime in the lowest band.

Probing disorder-driven topological phase transitions via topological edge modes with ultracold atoms in Floquet-engineered honeycomb lattices

One of the most fascinating properties of topological phases of matter is their robustness to disorder and imperfections. Although several experimental techniques have been developed to probe the geometric properties of engineered topological Bloch bands with cold atoms, they almost exclusively rely on the translational invariance of the underlying lattice. This prevents direct studies of topology in the presence of disorder, further hindering an extension to disordered interacting topological phases. Here, we identify disorder-driven phase transitions between two distinct Floquet topological phases using the characteristic properties of topological edge modes with ultracold atoms in periodically-driven two-dimensional (2D) optical lattices. Our results constitute an important step towards studying the rich interplay between topology and disorder with cold atoms. Moreover, our measurements confirm that disorder indeed favors the anomalous Floquet topological regime over conventional Hall systems, indicating an enhanced robustness and paving the way towards observing exotic out-of-equilibrium phases such as the anomalous Floquet Anderson insulator.

Drag-induced skin effect in a Bose-Fermi mixture

The non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE) represents one of the most distinctive phenomena in non-Hermitian physics. Here, we uncover a new drag-induced NHSE mechanism in interacting Bose--Fermi mixtures where only bosons, but not fermions, experience asymmetric hopping. We show that strong Bose--Fermi interactions enable fermions to inherit boundary accumulation through correlated bound states. The interplay of interactions, quantum statistics, and non-Hermitian dynamics gives rise to an interaction-induced blockade mechanism, leading to highly asymmetric fermionic transport. We demonstrate that the drag-induced NHSE is dynamically stable and propose a feasible realization in ultracold Bose--Fermi mixtures with Floquet-engineered asymmetric tunneling. Our results establish a qualitatively distinct route to the NHSE, where non-Hermitian localization is not generated by direct nonreciprocal hopping of the localized particles themselves, but emerges through the interaction-mediated transfer of non-Hermitian dynamics between different quantum species. This mechanism further provides a potential route toward species-selective control of localization and transport in hybrid quantum matter.

Jaynes--Cummings dynamics of fermionic heteronuclear dimers in the Mott regime

We formulate and exactly solve a model for coherent association and dissociation of fermionic heteronuclear dimers in the deep-lattice Mott regime. Starting from the onsite three-component atom--molecule Hamiltonian, we show how the single-site model maps to the paradigmatic Jaynes--Cummings Hamiltonian from quantum optics. In this mapping, the fermionic molecular/free-atom sector forms an effective two-level system, while the bosonic atomic mode plays the role of the oscillator degree of freedom. We fix the conserved number of fermionic constituent atoms to one but allow an arbitrary conserved number $N$ of bosonic constituent atoms. The accessible doublet is then $|e,N-1\rangle\leftrightarrow|g,N\rangle$, and the coherent conversion coupling is bosonically enhanced to $χ\sqrt{N}$. Exact analytic expressions are derived for molecular dissociation, atom-pair association, mode populations, and boson--fermion correlation dynamics. The model provides a transparent matter-wave realization of Jaynes--Cummings physics in a heteronuclear Bose--Fermi system and an exactly solvable setting for understanding coherent atom--molecule conversion and bosonic enhancement in lattice systems.
